I always thought, and still do, that it was deliberate.
ボーイ means Boi, which fits, I guess.
In any case, this applies to Japanese; in Hànzì it may be inaccurate or maybe wrong though.

yes, ボーイis fine (for english "boy" even; no need to drag in "boi"). vertical script requires a vertical bar, tho.

I've seen that many times, in headlines or ads.
And yep, it's part of "Taxi", which is not Japanese by origin.

there is nothing wrong with "ボーイ" whatsoever, but when u write it vertically, the dash must be vertical to match. doesn't matter whether taxi is a native word or not, when it's written horizontally (the caption), the bar is horizontal; when it's written vertically (photo), the bar is vertical. ditto for boy.

to do it any other way is a bit extreme as a simple "design" choice. not IMPOSSIBLE, i suppose (backwards "R" in Toys R Us comes to mind), but pretty unlikely, IMHO. is boy george known for writing his "B" backwards or his "y" upside down or the like in english? that's the only scenario where i can see them mucking up the japanese in a similar manner.

if u have an example of the horizontal dash being used in vertical script, i'm all ears. i'm sure there are a FEW out there (like that backwards R), but here i believe it is just a typo.

I am familiar with Japanese syntax, thank you.

I have since asked a native speaker, who was very amused by it.
She thinks it's a forgivable misspelling and, as I said, possibly an intentional mistake, due to the cover design.

I can't compete with someone who teaches classical Japanese literature at a college, and I just have to accept that.
