His tone definitely got cleaner. He's always been mostly a purist, just a guitar straight into an amp, nothing else (maybe a Rangemaster treble booster unit sometimes). He's typically always used Marshall model 1959 Super Lead plexi amps or Marshall JMP 2203 amps. Not sure what he's been using in the studio in more recent years. If it's been his old private stash of his best vintage Marshall
heads like always, he's been setting them differently for sure.

For 1990's Razors Edge, he had LOTS of overdrive. Had those amps running so hot they almost sounded like some of the newer higher gain Marshall JCM800's that were out at the time. But as time went on, with each succeeding album, they seemed to dial the overdrive back a bit more and more. Their last album, Rock or Bust, sounds like he's playing through a totally clean amp and just strumming hard to keep it sounding appropriately beefy.

I can't really tell if his techniques gotten any better. Since day 1, he's been an amazingly good player and that's never changed. It's even more amazing when you see old footage of him from the 70's flopping around all over the stage like a maniac and still managing to hit every note perfectly. Crowds in the mid 70's had be in utter shock witnessing him for the first time. I mean Hendrix and Townsend did some freaky shit on stage, but they didn't have 1/10th the energy that Angus Young had.
