This Willie Nelson/Elvis thing re Always On My Mind.
You're forgetting something pretty important. Geography. Willie Nelson is world famous in USA. Billboards/Grammys/blahblahblah Presley is world famous GLOBALLY. IN UK/EU/Mid-Far East etc outside dedicated country & western fans few people know of Willie Nelson. Everyone knows Elvis. The man's been dead half a century and there are still festivals of Elvis all over the world. his version of Always is used in everything from TV soundtracks to adverts. Pet Shop Boys' version is the most radical I know of but I'd say Presley's is the most widely known purely because of his global fame and the fact that it would feature in everyone's "10 Elvis Singles I Know". I like to think I'm pretty musically literate but really I'd struggle to name half a dozen of Willie Nelson's.
