The replay showed that the Lions player squared his forearm across his body and delivered the shot directly to Smith's face mask.

Good news for us Seahawks fans is that we beat a regularly overrated Jerry Jones team on our home turf. Supposedly we "punished" them but to me it looked like how football was supposed to be played. Ah, I miss when you could hit a guy like Jack Tatum or stiffarm a player like Payton and not worry about the long-term consequences of traumatic brain injury.

I can't wait for Monday night football. I've been pumped since Chris Berman and his 27 retired NFL co-host personalities began to talk about this "historic" game last Monday night. I'm into hour 13 today of them talking about Peyton Manning. I wonder when they'll mention the city of Atlanta...

The replacement refs must go. Even some of the calls yesterday that helped the Skins before they ultimately lost were terribly bad. And tell that ref he doesn't know how to do the "Personal Foul" gesture properly!

If a team tags a player with the franchise tag, can they still trade him?

The Giants played like champions tonight, in the pregame show, nobody picked them to win the game, and today they kicked ass. Andre Brown making the most out of his opportunity and Ramses Barden catching every pass, I must say that a lot has to do with the double coverage the Panthers were doing on Cruz. The O line looked solid, but keep in mind that the Panthers pass rush and run defense is pathetic. Road Warriors indeed.

NFL teams can franchise tag and then trade a player. It would require the player signing the tag first. The Patriots tagged and traded Matt Cassel in 2009:

Tagged: Feb. 5

Deadline to tag: Feb. 19

Summary: This was a unique case in which the Patriots tagged Cassel with the intention of trading him, and thus, they assigned the tag to him on the first possible day. That set up a scenario in which the faster Cassel signed the tag, the faster the team could consummate a trade (a player can't be traded without a signed contract). Yet there was risk in doing so, because it wasn't certain there would be a trade suitor and the Patriots could have been on the hook for a guaranteed $14.65 million to Cassel. The Patriots, who were projecting Tom Brady would return from a torn ACL and be ready for the start of the 2009 season, ultimately traded Cassel to the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 28.
