Sadly whatever punishment is mooted out to the parents won't undo the irreparable harm done to the children. Those kids (save perhaps the youngest) have almost zero chance of living normal lives given the impact their upbringing will have had on their mental, physical and emotional development. It's completely tragic.

Certainly agree that the wider family should be brought to account (though a lot depends upon how close and interactive they were with each other), however much stricter state regulation and monitoring of homeschooled children (with ad hoc visits) wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing because this certainly isn't the first incident of this type and it's fair to say that right now there are probably children out there living in similar if not worst conditions unfortunately.

First it was Josef Fritzl. Then Ariel Castro. Now these two. What's perhaps the most frightening and depressing thing about this is the question of just how many of these sick situations are there around the world, in well developed countries even, yet to be found?

I can't say I'm shocked, as the human psyche has proven countless times how dark it can be, but it's still fucking sad. Hopefully the kids get the help they need to move on with their lives.

Oversight by the education authorities is vital: just as regular schools need to be inspected and assessed, so should 'home schooling'.

Ovesight by the parents should be the foremost absolute.
There are plenty of stories floating around the news if you care to search about public school student and teacher affairs, pregnancy etc. Nothing as extremely troubling as this situation but not much better considering public schools should have plenty of oversight.
How did that oversight prevent any of these other incidents?

No amount of oversight will be 100% but once you open the doors of your home to these types of "oversight" agencies you're referring to, they will have an unimpeded right to breach your privacy at their own discretion. This is not an acceptable alternative, IMHO.

When those kids where rescued, they didn't even know what a police officer was: the education they received was wholly inadequate.

I hate to even enter this idea, but i wonder if any of the siblings are their own kids, meaning the older ones had sex and then the girls gave birth to their own kids and are seen as brother as sister, the kids seem very slow developed and not able to grasp much, i know 100% they were held captive it seems possible though incest may have played a rule for birth defects, i hope im dead wrong, but looking at the psychotic parents i wouldnt be surprised if it came out they told the older siblings to engage in sex.

That's because they were NOT homeschooling. Their parents used this as a ruse. In every facet of society, some people lie, cheat and steal. These people cheated the system and tarnished the lives of their children forever. The rest of the country should not have to bear punishment for their actions.

The father only used the school rouse so that authority's weren't asking why their children weren't in school, assuming the town knew they had all those kids and verified they were of school age if they looked them up in any district and it said homeschooled that wouldnt have raised eyebrows why they weren't in school, the parents only lied that way to make sure no cops or school officials came to the house. I still find myself asking the question i asked after the 3 women in Cleveland and this story, how did NOBODY ever see or hear them, a delivery guy, UPS, a pizza guy next door, a gardener , a women walking her dog, its very likely they saw just didnt know what they were exactly seeing. I mean this was California, on a nice day you cant tell me people didnt walk along that street to jog or walk their pets or just to take a walk.
