![]() I was disappointed in the first 2 episodes too.
It felt like the typical liberal hollywood fanfare of todays era, all flash and little substance. Isn't the series supposed to be pre- the original star trek? If so, they could have wrote it so that the characters started off in 'conventional roles', which would have been more an accurate representation of those times. The opening episodes could have been all about that, and how an encounter made it so she proved herself. This would have given us more of the character building up dialogue. Instead they cut all that stuff out to jump right to pushing a progressive message with no background. It's sad because if they had built things up more it would have had impact. In porn terms they went hardcore when they should have been softcore imho. |

![]() And once again the ships looks more advanced than the ships in Star Trek TOS.
Same complaint I had about Star Trek Enterprise. That ship looked more advanced than anything in Star Trek TOS. |

![]() Discovery is set only 10 years before the Original Series.
What I find hard to believe, is that in TEN years the uniforms went:

![]() Do any of you seriously believe that going forward, any pre-TOS show should have shitty uniforms, crappy ships and cardboard boxes involved in set designs?
The show was made on a shoestring budget for a network show over 50 years ago! Of course everything is going to look better now than it did then.

I've seen some of those fan re-boots and they look better than the original stuff. Given the era, the budgets, and just what people expected back then- I'd like to think that Roddenberry did what he could back in the 60's to make it look futuristic. EVERY new incarnation of Trek is going to look a little more stylish and better than the last regardless of what era it was supposed to be in. |

With that thought in mind, consider that the bigger budgets only provide better window dressing. Computer graphics has advanced the look and style. But the bottom line for me, is the writing any better. The look of the wave of re-booted ST movies certainly has updated the ship images, space battles and explosions all because of CGI. But are they better? I find most recent attempts are pretty boring. The more I catch reruns of TOS, the versions with the updated effects images, I find them overall more satisfying. Yes, there were some real clunkers (Spock's Brain), but Shatner's Kirk was still the best captain and the show's themes were at least fairly original at that time. The new breed are just rehashed and warmed over reruns. It all comes back to the writing. How many times are they going to reinvent the Klingons? I'd grant you seeing actor John Colicos with dark grease paint smeared on his face and Foo Mancho mustache didn't offer a lot, but the new offering is just not very satisfying. |

Bring on the stellar writing. Regardless of who wears the Federation uniforms, what the spaceships look like, or what the aliens look like- the stories have to be compelling. Give us viewers a reason to give a shit. Granted with shows like this it might have to be given a slightly longer leash than other genres just because one has to factor of new viewers getting used to the jargon and tech talk. We old school Trek watchers recall how it took a few stumbles out of the gate for shows like the first few seasons of TOS. It even took some of us a little while to get used to a show like DS9 where it was a stationary craft as opposed to a starship. I really hope that this show can give us some decent stories. The eye candy we expect already. |

When they got the "roundabout" and kept leaving the station, they jumped the shark. Then there was the war with the Kardashians that turned the show into "Combat!" trek style. Set the franchise back to the sixties. "Combat!" You young people will have to google that one. Oh, and speaking of Kardashians, an enemy that happens to have the same name as whiny, overpaid attention whores, coincidence? I think not. Oh, Trek had Cardashians? tomato, tomahto. Cardashians? Evil sweaters? |

Same goes for the sets: they can be architecturally appropriate for the stardate in question, without having to be made out of cardboard.
