I think you have pretty good coverage Urge. Might be an artist here or there who could squawk (e.g. Kate Bush, can't believe I forget her, sorry tmage ![]() Won't take too much of an issue with your "computerized music" comment -- some electronica is, but much is not. I'm not a huge electronica fan, mostly I'm into downtempo and chill type material in the genre, which is how I got turned on to the Bristol Sound, aka Trip-Hop in the early/mid 1990s. For this competition, Portishead is the tops of that heap, but I'll gab about them more when they come up. For this current group, Goldfrapp would represent that, as their first album (2000's Felt Mountain) was largely downtempo, though they picked up the pace with later albums, only returning to slower material in 2008. Current poll -- Lots of good artists, though I can't stand Bananananananananarama. Ugh. Its that shitty 80's pop that just sucks ass IMHO. Gladys Knight, Hope Sandoval, Ani Difranco all deserve to move on, though I doubt Ani or Hope will, sadly. Plus ... I see 2 "Great" artists/bands IMHO, in terms of career and hits. Dead Can Dance, with Lisa Gerrard ... absolutely. Didn't do rock music, so they are doomed here. ![]() ![]() ![]() She's done most everything ... didn't start singing professionally until the early 1990s, and has spent the last 20 years both entertaining the masses, and delving into most kinds of music. Of course she's always had that big powerful voice most suited to the Blues and Soul, but she's also done a fair amount of Pop, lots of R&B with and without the Funk Brothers (e.g. Standing in the Shadows of Motown), more rock and folky music like with the Grateful Dead, and even put out a country (ish) album. She's written a fair amount of songs, but her gift lies more in the singing ... you can tell by how many covers she's done, though yes she has written her share as well. Incidentally, she'll turn 50 next month. ![]() Whatever. Just an incredible voice. ![]() Studio/Live Discography Soul Show: Live at Delta '88 -- 1992 -- mostly folded into the Early Recordings disc Relish -- 1995 Early Recordings -- 1996 Righteous Love -- 2000 How Sweet It Is -- 2002 Pretty Little Stranger -- 2006 Breakfast In Bed -- 2007 Little Wild One -- 2008 Bring It On Home -- 2012 There were 2 crappy single CD "best of" compilations in the mid-2000s, neither were worth much. Just the record companies trying to make a buck. Also a Christmas album, but I hate Christmas music. ![]() First, the song everyone knows ... and many love, though some hate. ![]() ![]() "Oh, one of these nights at about twelve o'clock This whole earth is gonna reel and rock Saints will tremble and cry for pain For the Lord's gonna come in his heaven airplane." Great, wonderful, sensual, playful album (Relish), with an amazing variety of songs. Very few weak tracks. Have to admit my favorite song off that album is one that Joan wrote herself, "Crazy Baby". Its not a "great song", but still has great appeal. ![]() ![]() Joan covered an great little Bob Dylan song called "Make You Feel My Love" back in the late 1990s ... studio version is on her 2000 Righteous Love album, but she's included it in many of her live performances in the 21st century as it makes a great end-of-night closing or encore piece. Adele (oops?) did a nice -- and infinitely more famous -- cover of this song in 2008, but I'll take Joan, please. ![]() ![]() Her 2012 album of R&B/Soul covers is really awesome, but too new and not much useful on youtube, only shitty live versions. Here's a nice song from her next most recent studio album - 2008's Little Wild One - called "Hallelujah in the City". Vote Joan! ![]() ![]() RF p.s. check out my Joan thread in the music section if you want mp3's. Can get all of the above, and bootlegs too. ![]() http://veterperementour.ru/t199743-joan-osborne.html

![]() We're dead, man. We're all dead.
Honestly, with this round, I'm unfamiliar with a lot of these acts. I can appreciate solo singers, but that's just not really rock n' roll so I don't listen to them much. And pop? Meh, I could do without the genre altogether. That's why I only voted for two acts-- Mazzy Star and Nancy Sinatra. Mazzy Star is a band I got into several years ago. Their work isn't the heaviest, but it's powerful. And Hope Sandoval's attitude is just about as rock n' roll as one can get. As for Nancy Sinatra, she was just always an exception to my not listening to solo singers. She's written a lot of great songs and I really enjoy her work. |

![]() Okay who rigged the poll for a one hit wonder. Sure I loved Venus and Cruel Summer. but the Bangles went farther than that :P and Ace of Base did Cruel Summer better :P
![]() poll came together so quick many were left out (albeit I haven't checked to see if Heart is in there or not. I'm lazy) or depressed. rough week when ones dad tells me that the family would be better off if I were dead. he's a broken 33 rpm record. 45's sometimes skipped. cracked 78's never skip

My votes Nancy Sinatra Bananarama Joan Osborne Shirelles Corrs Gladys Knight and the Pips Yes, I'm a SLAYER fan posting a Bananarama video. I was 12 years old the summer that went big, and even though it's kind of a haunting, dark song, it brings back good memories for me. |
