Personally, I have never been much of a country music fan, I am more into Rock-N-Roll,
but my late father was a huge country music fan. He had all those cool country hit records. This one is for him... Willie Nelson - My Heros Have Always Been Cowboys

This is a pretty obscure track from about '63-'64. Stunning lyrics and melody... it deserved way more recognition.

Johnny Cash would've been proud to write them... The flowers are wilted The preacher's gone And I'm left here jilted On the church-house lawn Through the old graveyard I'm gonna walk around And bury my heart Where it won't be found Six foot under Six foot under Six foot under Down in the cold, cold ground Like a fool I trusted Your honey-like words Now my heart is broken It's all for the birds In a deep deep hole I'll vanish safe and sound Where you can't get to it And kick it around Six foot under etc. |

When I think of Country, I think of its roots - the songs of pain and yearning. Then I think of the anodyne pop shmaltz masquerading as it now. When have these fuckers ever had a bird of paradise fly up their nose. Have they ever had an elephant caress them with their toes? I just hope their fucking wife develops runners in her hose...
But yeah, this guy might be a little to blame. Gram Parsons. A rich trust-fund kiddie, but still one of the coolest guys ever to walk this planet. He looked the part too. Suits from Nudie with pills and hash leaves all over them. Hey, if you're gonna dress right... you have to dress really, really wrong. Great in the Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Damn... the Burritos were so good. The 'Stones even gave them "Wild Horses" before they'd recorded it themselves. Regardless of his dumb and tragic death, he did knock out a few stunning songs on his own. This is one of my favourites he did solo. Shmaltzy, but that guitar hurts so much in all the right places... |
