Dogs are cool because we can communicate with them and work together.
There are not many other animals with that kind of intelligence. |

I love dogs, too.
However, my dog passed away a few years ago and we haven't got a dog since. It's sad, really.

Dog Stolen From California Found With Burglary Suspects in Florida 4 Years Later
ktla.com November 24, 2019 A bulldog stolen from California back in 2015 was reunited with her owner after being found with two burglary suspects in Florida more than four years later, authorities said. The Sarasota Police Department arrested two people accused of a burglary spree in the Lido Key area, where officers found the dog the two had allegedly stolen. Police said Tracie Defee, 52, and Michael Paine, 48, are suspected of at least eight burglaries between Oct. 18 and Oct. 20. Officers notified residents in the area of the burglaries of who they were looking for and that they may be with a bulldog. The police department received a call on Oct. 20 that a resident on Lido Key had spotted and was in contact with an individual walking the described bulldog. After a thorough search of the area, officers found and arrested Defee and Paine in a bathroom inside a home on Grant Drive. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services responded to the scene and took custody of the bulldog, Maggie. Luckily, Maggie turned out to have an electronic chip in her that told police she belonged to a man in California. Investigation revealed Maggie was taken from her California home in October of 2015. The Sarasota Police Department contacted Maggie’s family in California and organized her return home. She was returned home Monday, Nov. 18 and reunited with her family. But getting Maggie home was not cheap, so Sarasota Police officers footed the bill, raising $800 to transport her home. The California family does not wish to be identified, but WFLA spoke to the man who transported Maggie home last week. He said the dog immediately recognized its owner. “As soon as Maggie saw him, she took off bolting, running to him. She actually ripped the leash out of my hand to get to him faster,” said Todd Grippe with Haulin’ Paws. It just goes to show no matter how far they’ve gone, a dog is truly loyal to the end. Paine is facing one count of burglary and one count of trespassing while Defree faces five counts of burglary – among other charges. |

Siberia: 18,000-year-old frozen 'dog' stumps scientists
This 'dog' is so cool it's frozen bbc.com 28 November 2019 Researchers are trying to determine whether an 18,000-year-old puppy found in Siberia is a dog or a wolf. The canine - which was two months old when it died - has been remarkably preserved in the permafrost of the Russian region, with its fur, nose and teeth all intact. DNA sequencing has been unable to determine the species. Scientists say that could mean the specimen represents an evolutionary link between wolves and modern dogs. Radiocarbon dating was able to determine the age of the puppy when it died and how long it has been frozen. Genome analyses showed that it was male. Researcher Dave Stanton at the Centre for Palaeogenetics in Sweden told CNN the DNA sequencing issue meant the animal could come from a population that is a common ancestor of both dogs and wolves. "We have a lot of data from it already, and with that amount of data, you'd expect to tell if it was one or the other," he said. Another researcher from the centre, Love Dalen, tweeted a question about whether the specimen is a wolf cub or "possibly the oldest dog ever found". Scientists will continue with DNA sequencing and think the findings could reveal a lot about the evolution of dogs. The puppy has been named "Dogor", which means "friend" in the Yakut language and is also the start of the question "dog or wolf?" Modern dogs are believed to be descendants of wolves, but there is debate over when dogs were domesticated. A study published in 2017 suggested domestication could have occurred 20,000 to 40,000 years ago. |
