VirtualDub will not do it. When I try a pop up comes up and states...
VirtualDub Error
Couldn't locate decompressor for format DX50 (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatable codec to decompress video.
DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

I have no idea what to do about this. Can somebody help?

what format is the dvd in that you are trying to split?

Do you have any codec installed? if not Install this codec pack, and then VirtuaDub try agin

combined community codec pack

DX50 is the DivX codec (DivX 5 to be exact)

Either get the codec pack as suggested by DiamondHead, or grab just the standalone DivX codec (currently version 7)

if you got the file here then it is 3 seperate avi files.
it would seem that you are attempting to convert them to dvd, nero etc are no use for this really as there is no real customization (or decent automation for that matter), if dvd is what your are after i suggest convertxtodvd. it is a simple app to use and it will automatically adjust the setting to let you put as much as you want (within reason as quality does suffer) onto one dvd.
if you just want them on a dvd for backup purposes then you should just burn them off as "data" dvd. the max you can fit on a dvd is 4.36gb.
if you got the files here and/or it is three seperate files you dont need to cut anything. but if you do need to cut then i recommend nandub or vdubmod as they can handle more audio types than virtualdub.
as for codecs you only need divx, xvid, ffdshow and ac3filter (for audio) - no need for codecpacks.

You can also try converting the file and messing around with video settings to make it smaller to fit on a disc. I agree with DiamondHead HJ Split is more used for splitting files and uploading to a host site to post somewhere else or to re-join videos you download from a site like this.
