I have my cousin who has an ASUS ultrabook that, if there's no ASUS software installed on it, it won't let him use the FN keys nor even change any brightness settings to his likings. I miss the old days when those IBM monster laptops were still around.

HP customization of hardware and software has been an issue since their first PCs. HP customizes their screen software leaving people screaming that there is no contrast settings for those off us with older eyes.
I bet that HP is already working on a fix (or has one) but the more that ask for a fix, helps to up their level of priority. This is probably just a driver for the graphics hardware. I wouldn't spend anymore on it but I the problem is not really that serious. |

Yeah day two with this shit and now after System Restoring it hoping it work fix things nope same problem with another one now. The Brightness Levels doesn't even work now even if I change it manually. So much my Brightness Level is at it's highest even when I try to do troubleshooting with the Power Options it stays it changed it, but it's still bright. I wouldn't have a problem with it, but my fear is my Laptop Charger Life Span might go faster than the original one that came with the HP Laptop.

Edit-I fixed the problem of not being able to change the Brightness Level it works now, just not in unison with my Charger when I plug it into my Laptop. So one problem fixed after I Re-Downloaded the latest Driver for the Graphics Card. I wonder if my Battery which is a Replacement needs to be replaced. |

no, its just a normal default action for when you are on a battery, laptops etc have many tricky power saving features....
you can find the setting in "power option" - select current power plan, ckick on "change power plan", then click on "change advanced power settings" etc you can change it in the power setting see below links on google, search this line of text in google search" brightness dims when unplugged" ..................................................................... i think this should help |

Okay. I've done some digging. Go to 'Settings' Type in 'Battery Saver' - not 'Power Options' You should see the following three options: 1: Turn battery saver on automatically if my battery falls below: 2: Battery saver status until next charge. 3: Lower screen brightness while in battery saver. What are they set to? I assume if: 1: Is set very low. And/or 3: Is not ticked. Your screen will not change brightness. Play around with it, let us know what you find out. Regards Gwynd

I'm about try this out and I see what you're talking about. Turn battery saver on automatically if my battery falls below is set to 20%, Battery Saver Status till next Charge is off, and the Lower Screen Brightness while in Battery Saver is not ticked yup. Okay so when I have Battery Status till next Charge ticked and Lower Screen Brightness while in Battery Saver ticked it dims and stays like that till I plug in my Charger. It seems that is the way to go. |

Careful with that setting, only because not only will that setting affect screen brightness, it may affect other factors of performance as well, including processing power and background processes in general. Your computer will seem (and maybe be) slower overall. Just something to keep in mind.
