Perhaps they shouldn't and can not be charged for not rendering assistance, but they witnessed a death and did not report anything to anyone.
As was alluded to previously, if you have a problem with the way the current 14-25 year olds live their lives, I imagine you can point to the parents... who are the generation that complain the most. It is just really easy and cliche to blame a new generation wholesale. We can commend WWII soldiers and call them the "greatest generation" but as far as American soldiers go, they had it easy compared to what the boys faced in Vietnam. Namcot, you can honestly say that if a grown man came to your door with one of your kids and said he saw her doing something she shouldn't have, so he whipped her ass and forced her to tell him where she lived, you would invite the guy in and give him refreshments? Life for humans has always evolved to make things easier for us. All these gadgets and ways to communicate... did these teens invent it? The smartest and most innovative people on the planet would probably never complain about how much easier younger people have it. I started this thread off by saying I wouldn't blame generations or ages, because people of ALL ages do nasty disgusting shit to their fellow humans every single day. |

I don't know, Gtzaskar. This generation seems to be completely desensitized and totally devoid of empathy - I've never seen anything like it. I wonder how much of a role the internet plays in this, when you can view graphic images of death and destruction, mayhem, executions, beheadings, & disfigurement all at the touch of a button. Not to mention news media that devotes the majority of their coverage to such negativity. Back in the 80s, there were incidents of young people doing horrible things, but they were few and far between. Now, they seem to occur on a weekly basis and it's frightening.

They are just despicable fucking human beings period.(I would have used prettier words, made thought provoking statements, told the truth but I have no desire to have my comments erased (happens quite often my comments just seem to disappear or gasp get a strike).

I guess no one here grew up in 80-90's Chicago. I have encountered much worse than this. The only role that the internet and social media plays is that things the nightly news and newspapers would not have covered easily become international news. If 5 teens just laughed as someone drowned no one hears a peep. If 5 teens watch a man drown, film it, and post it on Facebook or whatever... here we are talking about it. It is our access to news from anywhere on the planet that makes all this known.
I played violent video games, I had the internet growing up, my generation was called lazy and devoid of empathy. Generation X was the slacker generation, and we all seem to be making a difference in the world. Also, there are plenty of sick fucks my age too. It was just a lot tougher to post a video of us being dicks and inhumane on AOL. |

Yes: you are right about the internet. Back in my day there was virtually no way to document that drowning, but this doesn't mean that even back then there weren't some dumb callous fucks that would of have a laught while they stood by and done nothing. As for the legality of this incidents, it's all about jurisdiction: some countries/states consider it a serious criminal offence for a person to stand by and do nothing to help another whose life is at danger of death by accident, while others do not have such legislation in place. Florida appears to belong to the latter category, however there may well be other crimes to consider (such as failing to report a death, etc).

I also played violent video games, but there's a HUGE difference in violent games and movies and viewing actual beheadings, heads blown off with shotguns in extreme closeup, pow's burned alive and run over with tanks, decapitations via chainsaw, and throats cut - and that's just the tip of the iceberg (or icepick?). Just a few days ago, there was an article in USA Today about how the suicide rate among middle school age kids has skyrocketed in recent years. Is it any wonder? Those were probably the ones still with a sense of empathy and couldn't deal with the fear and evil that surrounds them. I know you've mentioned that you have kids of your own, so I guess you have to remain hopeful of the future for their sakes. Me, I don't have kids, so my cynicism is strong and unadulterated. I have to respectfully disagree, but I believe they are representative of their peers. Of course, as I stated above, my cynicism is strong. |

As to generation X... we were probably the second generation that cared about a lot of important issues. I won't go into all of them because who knows what people may find "political". If you really think those kids are a representation of their peers... go volunteer or something at some high schools. You are dead wrong on that one. Because you won't hear about every nice normal kid. You only hear about the human shit stains. Just like anything else in the news. |
