They're the most crucial phases of a flight. Anything can happen during takeoff and landing. On take offs, pilots only activate the TO/GA (thrust control) and LNAV/VNAV buttons, and they fly and control the climb rate as well the airspeed and flaps. This up until they reach 10,000ft. Once above 10,000ft, the autopilot gets activated and the flight continues as scheduled. On landing, if a runway is equipped with ILS antennas, they wait until the plane gets aligned with the runway and the autopilot has caught the glidescope, before disconnecting it at 2000ft. Then they take control right until touchdown and arrival at the gate. If a runway does not have any, or it is very tricky to get the plane aligned automatically (like the old Hong Kong Kai Tak airport), the pilots get instructed by ATC until the pilots have the runway in sight. BUT......in case of an emergency, they always do all the work. How do I know? Lots of study, practice on Flight Sims and real-life experiences, talking with pilots.

Personally, I rather look forward to the day when all vehicular traffic is fully automated, and electric powered.
I like the idea of a car taking me to my destination while I take a nap in the back, or read the paper, watch a movie, etc, then dropping me off on the doorstep of were I need to be before going off and parking itself. It would be just like having a chauffeur who is never tired and is always on the ball, knowing the full traffic and weather situation in real time. Of course I don't think this will happen in my lifetime, but in order to get there we have to start somewhere, even if the drive is currently lead by the likes of Elon Musk (I am the only one who thinks his name belongs in the Star Wars universe...?). I can't stand the man personally, but he has the drive and ambition to push things forward, and many other car manufacturers have their own plans as well.

And for the people that think, "Only a handful of crashes and deaths in several years isn't that bad". That's simply bad math. Here's why: Tesla accounts for a small percentage of the vehicles on US roads. Since 2015, Tesla as a whole has sold 920,379 in the US. Now let's compare that to the sales of the Honda Civic not all Honda cars, just the Civic from 2015 to present in the US. Roughly 2.2 million Civics. As a whole, Honda sells well over 1 million cars per year. Now factor in all the other popular brands like Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Dodge, etc. So you can see the problem if you scale Tesla accordingly to other manufacturers. The crash stats and death toll would be much greater. This is where I got the US sales stats: Code:
goodcarbadcar.net Really though, this is less about the Tesla vehicles and more about the douche behind the company making promises that he knows cannot be done with the tech that we have at this time. He's lying to make a profit and killing people in the process. That is not the behavior of someone who is altruistic. It's more like psychotic behavior. Tesla drivers and other motorists should not be willing or unwilling beta testers for Musk's multi-billion dollar company, but that's his approach.

I tried searching for Tesla Autopilot crashes outside the USA and cannot find any reports. Anyone else had better luck?

cars have all kinds of safety features, can't shift out of park unless your foot is on the brake pedal, can't shift out of park if no one is sitting in the drivers seat or if your not wearing your seat belt, looks like they now need to put a safety on the cars so you can't shift out of park if the doors are open.
The problem with idiot proofing cars is that technology has it limits but stupidity knows no bounds. |

SOLUTION: Governments spend billions upon billions of dollars and lay down millions upon millions of miles of track in every street & then consumers can buy their own personal trollies with anti-collision devices.
Once again, pepo saves the world! .

Those who think who can drink a whole bottle of wine or Jack Daniels and get in their Tesla equipped with the latest F(fucking)-S(shitty)-D(dickhead) fool-proof system, might think THRICE, before hop in the car and get on the road. They aren't safe. I would NEVER consider a Tesla car, even if they might make improvements along the way, tbh. Long-time car makers like Mercedes, Jaguar, Suzuki, Toyota, BMW, Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini are sure to make Musk worshippers drool very badly. But, yeah. There are those who prefer to eat a nice clean butt, and those who prefer to eat a dirty and stinky one. To each their own, LOL. I just wish all Apple, Bezos and Musk shit products/services would just be dead gone, tbh. They're just as good as trying to timing your farts to a thunderstorm
