Image Program That Tests Valid Files?

I searched my PC for the "javaw.exe" file which was supposed to be in Sys64 but I don't have it. I'm not sure why that is.

Same question: what's a good program to read a digital image file, and determine what format it is, or if it's too corrupt?

I've got some 1996 scans of a Syd Barrett comic strip "Terrapin" (JPGs?! Shuddabin GIFs!) and a half-dozen JPGs are corrupt, but Notepad shows Adobe_Photoshop2.5 in the first few lines of code. PS_Elements won't process them either. ??

Back in the WinXP days, I had some prgm that would scan vid files to figure out which codex a file used. Sniff.

In the case of an incomplete file, if you read it in Hex. you'll see 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 all the way down from where the transmission failed, either on your end or the uploaders file was corupt when they posted.

On the other hand, a text file can easily be sniffed out if for example you thought you had a direct link to the image and downloaded a web page instead.

Thanks, RBN. The files are corrupt. Not only were the opening blocks odd, but the closing parts show recursive buffering patterns. Not 00 00 00, but definitely DED.
→I need to track down alternate copies, if there are any.

The code patterns in a failed JPG oddly mirror brain patterns: If you make an electro-encephalagram scan of a normal brain it will be jagged & snakey; and a repeating regular pattern is characteristic of an epileptic seizure.

Also, make sure that the opening tag is "JFIF" or whatever file format the image is supposed to be. GIF, PNG. I hope you recover them
