Thanks to everyone for the input. By the tone of input from the various shores of our briny blue, it doesn't sound like this will change any time soon. Perhaps that's OK. I once heard one of my neighbors use this word. A very well-respected retired businessman, referring to another of our neighbors. For a man who dresses impeccably even at 6 in the morning, I must say I was quite shocked. Shocked that he even knew the word.

If I ever called my wife a **** I Imagine I would get my ass beat. And she's 10 inches shorter and 90 pounds lighter.

Well, even there. In American usage, "slut" and "whore" seem to have very subtle connotations with women. But I feel confident using the word "whore" to describe porn performers. Mainly because most of them agree with me.

Here in Australia, cunt is used pretty widely and has no serious connotations. Hell, a lot of friends call each other cunt all the time, "What's going on 'ya cunt?".

So yeah, doesn't bother me at all.

I think it's one of those words that can only be said in very very select company. It's not exactly the sort of word that can be used easily and carries a shit ton of weight in the wrong circles. In America- like so many of you have said, it can get a man's nuts ripped right off. To me, the word is weaponized- it can explode or it can come in awfully handy if you really want to hurt someone with it. It's fuckin' deadly.

I think you're right on with this.

Which makes me wonder why British porno isn't marketed and sold more often here. The British whores use it rather liberally, and having the semi-taboo aspect it does in the U.S., I'd think something so verbally dirty would fly off the shelves. Missed opportunity, if you ask me.
