For many years I swore by Arcsoft's Photo Studio. It's a great photoshop wannabe, and has a ton of great features at very low ram/overhead.
I eventually grew into photoshop, but only naughty copies as I don't want adobe getting any of my personal information! (I love photoshop and other creative suite offerings from them - but Absolutely HATE adobe!!). There are a lot of good ones for mac too, if you're on that platform. I love Pixelmator as it's got everything needed, plus accepts 8bf filters and plug-ins that photoshop uses. But my mac died and I don't see replacing it any time soon.

Just a general comment relating to learning curves. No matter what program you use you've got to expect to put in a bit of time learning how to use it. I could be wrong about this - but I don't think there is any program that will isolate part of an image you want to cut and paste with a single click of the mouse. The magic wand is a pretty blunt tool unless you know how to use it, and learning how to use it takes time and effort.
I've used Gimp a lot and like it. One last thing - YouTube is a great source for tutorials for Photoshop, Gimp and other progs like that. A search for "Gimp magic wand" produced this tutorial amongst many others which might be of some help. Good luck. |

Image editing requires the user to dedicate him/herself to learning how to use effectively any given image editing application. I find that Photoshop is the most useful tool, but despite having used it for many years, I am still learning new things about it on a regular basis. It takes time and perseverance. Hard work, I know, but well worth the effort.

I have used GIMP, ArcSoftPhoto Studio, Corel, Paint.NET and PhotoShop, this last one is the most complete, but it takes time to learn it. If you have limited CPU/RAM, GIMP is may be a better option.

I'm using GIMP for two days now and it doesn't appear to be very complicated. Sure it's a very long road before I could reach the point of making professional looking artworks.

the conclusion of this thread is that Photoshop is the best we've got but I'll keep using GIMP as I'm just a beginner and will keep it until I step up the ladder. Just one thing remains that no contributor has laid their eyes upon i.e 3d text inserting, I tried GIMP but I've done better with Picasa. Are there any plugins that I could install or any other program which would allow me to insert 3d text. This is what I accompolished in two days |
