the good thing about the external HDDs is the prices are always going lower so every few years i buy another one and use the previous as a backup.

Yep. I learned that lesson long ago. Backups. I keep 3 copies of everything. One on an internal, copies 2 and 3 on externals. That way, if one of your drives dies, you can replace it, and the odds of the other *two* dying while you're doing your rebuild are miniscule. Encrypted partitions, of course. You can get WD 1, 2, or 4 TB drives for pretty cheap these days. If you want to go whole hog, you could add a 4th external and keep it offsite.

Always backup all your important data (stuff that you care about) to some DVDs/Blu-Rays. Never rely only on external drives for long-term storage.
Unlike HDDs, if they're stored properly, burned discs can last even up to 20 years. Proof is that the other day, while I was searching for some family photos, I found some old family vacation movies that were burned on some shitty-cheap Traxdata CDs, back on December 1998. They had a few scratches and some smudges. But, to my surprise, when I put the CDs on my DVD player, they played just fine. Can't say the same for external drives as they always lasted me probably 1-2 years, even under light use. So, external drives are very flexible and convenient for storing/moving data in the short-term. But for long-term storage, optical discs are still the best option....definitely.

I usually replace my external drives with new ones but this one, I didn't expect to use it that way, and I didn't use it quite often, so I was really surprised it stopped working like that.

Also it's powered with a simple USB cable. That's the kind of hard drive that is usually in laptops. I didn't touch it yet. I might try to plug it inside my desktop PC, if even possible, or grab another case. I care about my collection, but this one is kinda secondary with only full vintage movies. On an other hand I have my principal collection with scenes, and I admit I would be very upset if I lose it. But it's a 10 TB drive and it's not cheap to replace. Thanks for all the answers, I didn't expect to get so much. |

As for backing up your entire 4 TB drive, I have over 10 TB worth of Porn on spare DVDs/Blu-Rays. But.....it took me ages to download and backup everything. Granted, I only always downloaded stuff I liked the most (movie series mainly) and only a very few actresses packs (I'm always very selective about my Porn ). So that also saved me some time. At the time I didn't even had a single external HDD drive, but only a second 500 GB drive installed on my laptop that I used to store everything in it (temporarily). So optical discs were my only option for storing stuff I liked the most. Looking back at it now, I definitely wouldn't do the same thing. But for what was worth, I have Porn to watch for the next 15 years or so (provided I don't get married or have any kids.....probably I won't as i'm very reluctant and pessimistic about raising kids in this very cruel world. But that's another story for another day) However, If you're planning, one day, to do some backups (from scratch) to some DVDs/Blu-Rays, it's better if you first check what to keep and what not, just as I always did. Or be selective, and only download stuff you really care about the most. That way the number of discs you will have to use will definitely decrease, and you will also have some more time to do other things too As for HDD brands, the most reliable ones that I used have always been Hitachi, Toshiba and Maxtor. With WD drives I always had bad luck. Either they were DOA, or they only lasted a couple of months. So I always avoid them if possible.

I've had great luck with Sharkoon DriveLink Combo (google it). Insert the hard drive into the device. I've been able to read HDs that not even GetDataBack could find.Highly recommended! But be sure to get the USB3 version!
