Just wanted to add, that based on the resolution that you posted in the title, there should be black bars on the top and bottom if you are using a standard 16:9 screen (ie: 1920x1080 resolution).

I already know about aspect ratios guys.
I shocked when I managed 1920x1080 playback one day with Mediacoder Preview Player. This was by complete accident.
By grouping up a bunch of files for jobs on MC and the the K!ng8 file got in there by mistake. So I thought maybe there's a why to remove the boarders and get it blown up. This could not be done with MC or any other freeware I knew of, so I thought I'd bring it up.

But the whole deal really was to tackle the problem with Mpeg2 files ripped from DVDs in 640x368.

I can remove the boarders with VLC for Mpeg2 files, but its the actual size of the picture that bugs me. -_-
640x480 was the intended quality for the files. Instead the picture comes out as 640x368 as illustrated and there was no way of getting round that. Even with file conversion and you remove the boarders and still the picture comes out as 640x368.

But with Avidemux, I'm able to get it at 480p. File conversion can be lengthy, especially when dealing with MPEG2 files.

I can't be dealing with squashed faces, that just completely ruins it for me.

If you find no solution in previous posts, try Format Factory, you can select the aspect ratio for output video.

Doesn't sound like an actual DVD format at that resolution. Of course it could have been messed up in the conversion process as you stated. Do you have/know the original DVD information and specs?

From the resolution you posted above, it sounds like VHS or VCD format.

In Avidemux have you tried the resize filter in conjunction with the cropping filter? I presume you are using the cropping filter to remove the borders.

If so once you have set the cropping filter, then open the Resize filter, make sure you untick Lock Aspect Ratio, then in the Resize Dimensions set the size you want for the output file, and lastly select the resize method (lanzcos3 is best but slowest). Click OK, exit the Filter Manager and you should be set to go - I think.

Wait, I'm really confused. The video stream is compressed vertically, like some kind of backwards anamorphic format? But there are black bars anyway in the original image stream? I think you can just resize it manually in whatever you're using for encoding, but that's... strange? If I actually understand you, anyway, which I might not.

Your're right. During playback it does look as though it was ripped from VHS tapes and put into Mpeg video format. We're going back 10 years after all.

I've decided to go with Cajetillax suggestion and went with Format Factory. Everything went smoothly first time. I used the crop feature on Format Factory and then select the 4:3 AP. Thanks Cajetillax.

To watch original video and avoid re-encoding, have a look at Avisynth, where you can write a script to manipulate your video, then save as avs file type and play using MPC.
If your PC is fast, you can do quite complicated functions without affecting realtime playback
