Depends on what you really need on the stick. Most, including the Flight Sim oriented sticks are covered in buttons.
When I used to play BF1942, I setup a controller for flight, and all you really needed in that game was the stick and a single button. I used a generic joystick ( I seem to recall it cost about $10) which worked (in that game) as well as my $200 Saitek controller.
Most all of my purchases are online, newegg or Amazon. Sounds like you want to visit a B&M store, in which case Best Buy is likely your best option. If nothing else, buy it at Best Buy and test it. If you like it, buy it online (likely much cheaper), and return the original to Best Buy.
