Didn't see anyone suggest the first thing I'd try... roll back the driver?
Also, check your automated restore points and compare to any recent hardware/software installs or system updates... just a thought. |

@shylock - u don't need to convince me that a dirty/slow fan could be causing problems -- i've had this prob on other laptops -- but i still don't get why u think the problem would be LESS after hibernate. here i am going on 48 hrs now, the touchpad is having no probs at all!
that would not be the case had i done a full/cold (re)boot. ----- NEW prob now, however: cursor, scroll, tabs etc all working great WITHIN edge (where i am typing this), but suddenly they don't work down on the TASKBAR. incl the little "show desktop" sliver on the edge. likewise, alt-tab has ceased working to cycle thru tasks. hmmm. have seen this before, but not often. it strikes me that WINDOWS EXPLORER has stopped working. (clock also stopped, fwiw) easy to fix in the taskbar, except...there's no way to get that open now! also easy to fix via reboot, except...damn. prolly gonna kill the TOUCHPAD again! so my choices are: continue on doing stuff in browser for days, weeks, months even, but w/o access to anything else, incl my FILES...or fix the latter at serious risk of seeing the former go all to hell again! decisions, decisions. |

@lonewolf -- my OP mentioned it. does rollback or del driver risk leaving me with NO driver? like, what if it pops up "install driver" or even "complete; click 'ok' to proceed" and i can't even do that much?
i am used to the whole "windows will now find a driver for..." routine, but always nervous to trust it on things as basic as keyboard or display. |

Or force an uninstal of the driver then reinstall it by force, which is the first thing that should of been tried. Have a spare wired mouse handy and do this In windows 10, Right Click the Start button represented by 4 small squares usually located at the bottom left of the screen. Left click on Device Manager Mice and other pointing Devices Expand the list and find your mouse driver, Uninstall touchpad driver it could be call Synaptics pointing device, anyway you'll see it. Now plug in your spare wired mouse to any USB port and go back to where you uninstalled the mouse driver and at the top of Device Manager look for the word Action, click on that and then click on Scan for Hardware Changes and that will reinstall the mouse driver, now restart your PC and then remove wired mouse and start using touch pad to see if that worked. And don't get Linux as it is a completely different OS and is cracking a walnut with a sledge hammer and not actually fixing anything. |

The underlying cause of Windows Explorer crashes where it freezes or stops working is damage caused to a memory circuit or processing circuit or a RAM bar or the processor from heat.

When in the Hibernate mode the motherboard program automatically triggers a diagnostic on the fan and diverts power to it to run at full RPM. |

You have to sit back and do a Sherlock Holmes thing, trying to solve the mystery... eliminate the impossible, do a mental flowchart... One question that I don't know has been put forth... any recent driver updates, or system updates? If it was working fine in the past, I'd try to identify when (approximately) things started going haywire, and/or what hardware/software that was recently installed/updated could logically cause the issue. If you think it's a driver issue, downloading an automated driver updater (Iobit makes a decent freeware version), run it, and see what it says. (There are some portable ones out there, but in this case, I'd go with an installer version.) Here's what I'd do, in order: - Run a Microsoft Hardware Troubleshooter and see if it identifies an issue. If it "repairs itself", problem solved... maybe. - And before doing any of the below, you may want to find a tech-dedicated forum (Microsoft?) and pose your issue there. You might get a different take from a member, or, preferably, a tech, who might walk you through some steps. Then... - Create a restore point, just in case. - Go into Device Manager, find the mouse driver, and try rolling back, first. (Might need to reboot afterward.) - If that doesn't solve the problem, then you can go back into Device Manager and delete the driver (but first, have a way to either reboot or shut down that DOESN'T require a mouse... in many cases, pressing and holding the power key for 5-10 seconds will shut down the computer - but save open files/work first. Or if you have a plug-in mouse, that would work too.). Restarting should automatically install a new driver. If not, you might restart in Safe Mode (which I believe supplies a basic driver), and then you can install a new one (specifically from your computer's manufacturer, or a generic one from Microsoft). If you still have issues, and if you're brave enough, you might try opening the computer and visually inspect the trackpad for anything amiss (loose wire/connection, excessive dirt/dust, etc.). After that, I'd take it into a repair shop. Hope some of this helps. |

right now i'm in some weird limbo. browser and all touchpad-related stuff working beautifully. desktop and other apps also working fine (unlike prior post).
otoh, taskbar nowhere to be seen. clock mostly frozen but suddenly does "update" every couple hours. alt-tab for switching windows glacially slow but IS working (marginally). lol. what bugs me more than something broken is something inconsistently broken. mere fact that i can browse and click w/o ANY PROB for 3 days now makes me skeptical of any heat/dead RAM theories. in any case, i will work thru the suggestions. quick question, tho: is there some command/trick/kludge where i cud force the fan ON permanently? or turn it UP or w/e? not in a position atm where i can use a cool-pad (which bailed me out on a definite heat problem 4-5 laptops back). or even aim a desk fan. |

Hardware & Software troubleshooters would be good to run. Also, have you done a virus scan lately? Seeing that last post, I'm not sure your issue has anything to do with the Touchpad driver. It could be anything from a bad registry entry to a failing HD to a corrupted version of Windows. My thought about a recent update seems more of a possibility... you might consider trying to reset your computer back to an old restore point, before all this stated happening. Trying Fix #5 here is a good jumping off point... should, via its results, give you an idea what is going on, I'm thinking. Wouldn't be a bad idea to do a Google search using the words "windows" and "freezing" (without quotes) and look at some of the entries... that's where I got the above from. If you have a techie friend, line him/her up... |

As I am a PC Technician by trade I can offer remote assistance using Team Viewer which is perfectly safe but the choice is yours.
