It sounds like a mechanical failure with your DVD drive.
Every single computer I ever owned that had an internal DVD drive had this happen. Since Apple stopped including internal DVD drives in its machines, I have been using cheap external USD drives: if one breaks down, I can easily replace it with a new device. Example of an affordable drive: Code:

again, what are the odds the failure would have occurred in the exact few hours guy was fixing something else?!
seems pretty unlikely. |

There should be a miniscule hole near the dvd tray that you can poke a straightened paper clip in to mechanically open the tray to retrieve a disc stuck inside without needing power.
If it's not obvious don't just poke around But yeah - it sounds like the drive's power connector to me.

laptop back from shop. intermediary reports guy said "drive was bad, had to replace it" but i can SEE it's the same one, so someone's lying! (intermediary, i think)
in any case, (reconnected? and) working fine now, so that's that. i'm not gonna ask further; guy is already pissed off at how this has dragged on. i just pray he didn't disconnect something ELSE during this latest fix. nervous to try out speakers, webcam, USB ports, etc now.... |
