Gerbils are better pets than hamsters. They live longer and are naturally social. If you have two full adult hamsters in a cage one will eat the brain of the other eventually, Gerbils will be buddies.
Rats are even more social than gerbils, but the quality of rats in the pet trade is poor. Many are infected with mycoplasmosis. Put the rat to your ear and listen for a gurgling sound in the lungs before you get a rat. Be careful to was your hands before handling a rat. If a human has been exposed to mycoplasmosis the infection will live in your nose for years and cause you no trouble, but if you pick your nose and handle a rat you can infect it with a life shortening disease. |
