When you stop to think about it, there's these kinds of contradictions all over the place, not just in Japan (though the latter is in a class of its own). Take the US, for example. You can show pretty graphic and gratuitous violence on TV, but if you show one nipple, all hell breaks loose.

Having said that, I'd be surprised if the censor doesn't go away in Japan sooner or later. It's become smaller and smaller over the years anyway.

There is a Gauge scene, clearly produced for the Japanese market, that features an inordinate amount of pixellation: I think it was produced in the USA, but the American editor over did it when laying on the mosaic (most likely in an attempt to play it safe).

A Japanese editor, more used to the Nipponic legalities of porn, would have been able to apply the required censorship in a far more restrained and tasteful manner, instead we are left with a scene that is "un-jerk-able-to".

One funny and less known thing about the censorship in Japan is how you can show every detail of a girl ramming her asshole with a dildo, as long as you hide her pussy either with a mosaic or a piece of tape (or something in that style). Apparently anal action isn't worth censoring.

I've seen my share of Japanese porn over the years (Anna Ohura and Hitomi Tanaka are my favorites) but can't remember seeing any japanese anal (penis in the girls ass) or DP scenes.

What's interesting to note about the censoring is these days there's a bit of a trend towards "thin mosaic" censoring that's not as blurry as before, and one thing I always found odd is the girls' asshoes are never censored. Yeah, the anal scenes are still censored somewhat but that's funny though. I've also noticed that there sometimes is much less censoring in hentai anime & manga, some artists just put a thin little bar over those spots but otherwise it's uncensored.
One other thought about the uncensored stuff: I have seen quite a bit of it where the "sizes" are not that small-as a whole you just have to know where to look. It probably depends on who's doing it and the series it's from (might want to look into Kamikaze Girls, Red Hot Jam & Catwalk Poison, all very good uncensored hardcore series).

There is something to be said for this. It does keep a certain sense of taboo with Japanese porn whereas American porn is half a step away from anything goes. It definitely keeps the audience coming back to hopefully see more or if there's something uncensored, it's really worthwhile. I'm sure there's some underground market for uncensored stuff over there too- but it's probably pretty risky to get a hold of. It's definitely a contradiction at times but there is something to be said for having that element of risk or intrigue.

You didn't really miss anything. There's tons of anal-focused Japanese porn out there, but they have no idea how to do it right. Watch one of these movies, and you'll be sitting through ages and ages of guys sticking dildos, vibrators, vegetables, tubes, and anything they can find up the girl's ass (while she looks deeply uncomfortable), then they'll inject her ass with a milky substance and make her eject it all over the floor as if that's erotic. Then finally, if you're lucky, they'll do some uninspiring anal sex in the end, but it'll be less than 10% of the total running time.

The way I see it, anal sex is still pretty alien to most Japanese in the same way that gay sex is. Watch a lesbian scene and you'll realize the directors have no idea what they're doing. It's like seeing a kid who hasn't seen a girl naked describe what intercourse is. The girls stick their tongues out as far as they can go and then "fence" with them, never actually kissing. They'll lick each other's face a little if you're lucky. Then the rest of the movie is spent watching them use vibrators and two-way dildos, maybe a little bit of tribadism once in a rare while.

It's the law and it used to be a lot worse. In the late '80s the mosaic was in fact a large blue dot covering the action. That morphed into a large heavy mosaic in the '90s and then came the thin mosaic which happened in the 2000s.

It actually was thinner a few years ago and has gotten a little more obstructive lately. Any uncensored you see may be from Japanese master tapes but it's typically edited and released in Taiwan or somewhere else offshore from Japan.

It is what it is and unlikely to change. Luckily, a lot more A list JAV stars are releasing uncensored movies than had been common in the past.
