‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund, Legendary WWE Interviewer, Dies at 76
yahoo.com January 2, 2019 The Wrap Okerlund first joined WWE back in 1984 — the Hulk Hogan days. Watch one of their most famous collaborations via the video above. Consider all the Donald Trump talk in it a bonus. “WWE is saddened to learn that WWE Hall of Famer Gene Okerlund, the most recognizable interviewer in sports-entertainment history, has passed away,” the pro-wrestling promotion said in a statement. “WWE extends its condolences to Okerlund’s family, friends and fans.” Okerlund got his start with the American Wrestling Association, where he interviewed the likes of Jesse “The Body” Ventura (who gave him his “Mean Gene” moniker), Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and Hogan. Okerlund became a staple on national cable TV after he made the move to the WWE, where he had notable interviews with “Macho Man” Randy Savage and The Ultimate Warrior, among many others. He sung the National Anthem during the first-ever Wrestlemania in 1985. Okerlund later moved to doing ringside commentary and hosting shows including “All-American Wrestling,” “Tuesday Night Titans,” “Wrestling Challenge” and “Prime Time Wrestling.” He moved over to World Championship Wrestling in 1993 where he again served as lead interviewer, until he returned to WWE after it was bought WCW in 2001. |

Speaking of Mean Gene, I once called the WCW Hotline and he stuttered for like 20 minutes before relaying any information. Safe to say that when the phone bill came, I was in deep shit.

Toni has also gone dark on social media, which I think is very smart on her part. Just wait for this shit to blow over. She's been blocking anyone and everyone that brings those leaks up, and I don't blame her.

Hey guys, I wanted to stop in. I haven't been watching wrestling regularly anymore, first because I was busy but now because it mostly sucks. I know they did an angle with Heath Slater as a referee, which is interesting, but it mustn't have been for long because now I saw him back jobbing again with Rhyno to old 3MB buddy Jinder Mahal. Raw is too long and I can't sit through an entire episode and Smackdown is even worse. Last week I was home for all of Smackdown but it was boring so I changed the channel.
Mean Gene was great, he was the voice of a generation. The most iconic backstage interviewer for sure. I heard Hogan is coming back to pay respects to him. I guess WWE forgave him by now for his views from years ago. Did you guys hear about indy wrestler Priscilla Kelly and a spot she did with putting a used tampon in another wrestler's mouth? It was fake but still pretty nasty. What's your take? |

In a way, it's no worse than Joey Ryan taking a slightly used lollipop out back out of his trunks. And it doesn't require being carried in on a squad of inflatable penises either(God that was so stupid to see live).
As for Hogan, he already had the comeback at the Crown Jewel(speaking of stupid things I saw live) and he got a low positive pop tonight. Maybe people were respectful because of Gene, but then Hogan seemed kinda lower energy(probably from grief) and the moment stayed focused on Gene so it was definitely nowhere as bad as it could have been. |
