You're not that far off.
I've heard that before.
Also, with The Kinks,Steppenwolf,Big Brother..others that don't come to mind right now.
They all had that guitar work, but lacked the heavy "crunch" & power, that defines metal to me.
Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, are widely accepted as the "Big 3" of early metal, and I'm good with that.

This was probably the first "speed/thrash metal" song.
Certainly the best of the time.
I heard that riff before most.
Kirk Hammett lived on the street behind me throughout high school, and
blasted the neighborhood.
He was in most of my classes in jr. and high school.
I hung out with him for awhile one year in summer school.
We never hit it off because he was a better student, and into guitars
instead of drugs/motor cycles/cars.
I remember we though he was nuts for paying thousands of $ for a Stratocaster.
