![]() The theory of evolution by cumulative natural selection is the only theory we know of that is in principle capable of explaining the existence of organized complexity.

![]() In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.

![]() Not necessarily, there are life forms for which a change is not required in order to survive pretty much anything

Scorpions for instance "Scorpions can truly be seen as living fossils because they have changed very little in 400 million years of evolution. These amazing creatures have some of the lowest metabolic rates ever recorded in any animal. Most species stay within 1 metre of their burrows and some may spend as much as 97% of their lives inside their burrows. Some species can go a full year without food, and some live without water at all, taking what they need from prey creatures." At that point, sure, they could grow a fifth pair of lungs or a ninth leg ... But what would be the point ? There's no need, they can already survive extreme heat or extreme cold, extremely toxic environments... Some don't even need water .... They have cannibalistic tendencies ... What else ? They are also very resistant to ionising radiations ... (up to 150 Sv, a man doesn't survive 5 Sv) Chances are, even if the couldn't change, they would still survive the mammals, human race included, without requiring any update |

![]() Your point is taken, and honestly, I am probably misinterpreting your original post. My point: Individuals do not evolve or adapt to their personal environment(s). As environments change, there will be individuals whose genes/genetic make-up are more suited to that (the new) environment. These individuals will be more likely to reproduce and pass on those genes, and the species evolves over time. My apologies. ![]() Edit: Additional apologies to DoctorNo, I didn't see your post until after I replied.

Stephen Jay Gould Scorpions never changed because the scorpion model worked just fine for all those years. They never had to adapt, because they worked. Sharks are the same way, they've been unchanged for millions of years. They got it right and haven't had any problem catching fish. Animals only change when its a benifit to change. |
