I know it can be done. Lord knows our parents and grandparents who drove on trips had to do without- but given the option on long stretches of boring roads, I'm clicking on the cruise control.

I've also heard from the previous generation of how they didn't have AC, power steering, power brakes, radios, and some of those other things that our modern vehicles have today as standard equipment too.

And here I am ordering a USB adapter from Amazon for my car today too. They would've never imagined some of the conveniences we have today.

When we were in Italy from when I was born until we came to the USA in 1977, Dad was with the Italian diplomatic corps.

The government gave him a loaner car and we used it to drive from Rome to every point north and south in Italy including taking the ferry across to Sicily and Sardinia.

We also drove it from Italy to France, to Germany, Austria, Switzerland.

It was an Opel Kadett http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opel_Kadett_B with only a 1.1 Liter engine, no AC, no power steering, no power brakes, no power windows, can't remember if it had a radio, also no seat belts in the back.

When my sister was born, Mom would hold her in her lap in the front seat. Child seats? NO such thing!!

I can still remember seeing the speedometer go up to 160 km/hour (99 miles) when we were on the highway and Dad will push it as fast as it would go.

Oh and those winding Italian and European mountain roads with no guardrail on the side and the tires just inches away from the edge of the road where it ceases to exist and my brother and I sitting in the back seat and sticking our heads out of the window and we look down, we see nothing but an open abyss.

Obviously long before the advent of ambulance chasing lawyers. But it obviously sounded as though you had one helluva life overseas.
