Escape To The Country

It's a TV program based out of the UK where the host finds prospective home buyers their dream house in the countryside preferably. They have a fixed budget and some of them are actually quite large. They look at a few different properties and decide on one to start their new lives.

The appeal to me though is the scenery, the episode I'm just watching right now they are in Scotland with gorgeous rolling hills and the countryside is just spectacular. Worst of all is I'm supposed to be there right now for the shooting of our film that actually just became a miniseries but the covid vaccine kind of kicked me in the ass. I'm still recovering from that and can't wait until I'm able to fly over there and enjoy it in person. Then a quick stop in Ireland and off to New Zealand. I wonder if I'll have one of those accents by the time I get back LOL

The Escape to the Country thing is a fantasy much followed by Londoners: the price for a good apartment in the right London neighbourhood can be greatly more expensive to buy that a Scottish castle.

^^^^^ That same thought has crossed my mind while viewing and especially the "hard sell" by the realtors on it. I enjoy it for the scenery more than the content.

Interestingly enough the castle comment from alexora reminds me of our Canadian real estate market some years ago that highlighted the disparity between east and west markets. When Toronto was stagnating economically and crime rates were on the rise, a lot of people sold their homes for outrageous sums and hired contractors to build them a home in say Calgary or Edmonton site unseen. When they traveled west and pulled up to their new home they thought they were at the wrong place because what 1 million got you in Ontario was maybe 1,200 sg ft and that same million here got you over 5 times that footage...

A lot of countries including Canada are now banning Chinese abroad from buying property for the foreseeable future due to them driving up housing prices to a point where the average person can't afford a home anymore and they use them simply as investment properties. They don't call it "Hongcouver" for nothing...

I kind of got that impression initially when the realtor would ask what is the budget we're working with and they would say 380000 pounds or something like that which is not a dollar amount that the average Londoner has to throw around unless they're pre-approved for a mortgage and have a strong heart when they see their monthly mortgage payments.

My investment company portfolio includes a lakefront property that my guy subdivided and sold plots with a 99 year lease but the one non-negotiable condition is that only "tiny homes" could inhabit the space. All plots are fully serviced including electric, water and sewer. It has its own police force independent of the RCMP, but things are rather quiet ninety-nine percent of the time.

His intention was to create a space for those that wanted to simplify their lives and he made the pricing very attractive. It sold out in under 1 month mostly by Americans that wanted a safer and more peaceful place to live...

We continue to purchase dilapidated properties that we bulldoze the condemned structures and build infills that we sell at cost plus 10 percent and we carry the mortgages at low interest to avoid banks that fuck consumers all in the name of sport.

Maybe that is my way of being able to sleep at night when on the other side of the coin one of my condo buildings just sold its last unit for 2.3 million cdn.

Much in the vein of Line of Duty (that was also made by the same producers), this is an excellent British 6 part mini-series detailing a police detective's investigation of a suspicious death aboard a nuclear submarine, during the course of which some disturbing facts come to light.

Recommended.

Oh dear god. Just watched the final episode and have to say that it is nothing like the coherently plotted storyline with believable scenarios that comprised Line of Duty. I wanted to like it but the storyline's implausability quotient was off the chart. And it wouldn't have mattered a jot or tittle if they had cast someone more commanding than Paterson Joseph as the submarine commander. He was totally unconvincing as a figure of authority but even had he been the script would have let him down. I got the impression that some woke producer got the idea that writing a crime drama about lesbian detectives might be a hit. Well, Hollywood has got away with endless love stories set against the backdrop of some historical event, so ... worth a shot?

I don't see any 'woke' influence here. Back in the day, the simple fact of having a female DCI (Detective Chief Inspector) would have been accused of being 'woke', if the term had existed back then...

BTW: am I the only one who thinks Paterson Joseph looks like Sean Michaels...?
