My 1st time to see wrestling I was a kid and my parents took me to a house show in MA. It was an old wooden building and was completely sold out and jam packed with people. Pedro Morales was the champ and he beat Greg Valentine quickly but the match I really liked was Gorilla Monsoon vs. George "the animal" Steele.

George was a riot. He tore off turnbuckels and threw the foam stuffing into the crowd, he kept jamming a foriegn object into Gorilla's throat and when the ref checked George he would turn away from the ref an we could see him hiding it in his teeth. Eventually Gorilla got it away from George and used it on him and the ref DQed Gorilla for using a foriegn object.

The first show I went to was the 1991 Survivor Series where The Undertaker won the WWE Championship from Hulk Hogan. I was probably the only kid cheering for the Demon from Death Valley.

Great article of JBL on "how to be a heel", hope that some of the creatives read that, the heels are being cheered more than the faces now, and reading that makes me realise why Cena could be a great heel.

That was an interesting read. JBL was an awesome heel.
Everybody hated him when he was WWE champion and he deserves credit for that.

Cena on the other hand absolutely sucks. Not because he's actually trying to be a bad guy or that he's any good at what he does. My Conclusion: Cena is the worst babyface in the history of WWE. He could get instant heat by turning heel though. Too easy.

JBL coming out and saying what everybody knows already, not like it is going to change anything.

Today, if you had somebody trying to be like Mr. Perfect and spit your gum in the opponent face, he might be sent to jail.

They all have to be so cute. The Wyatt's are the cleanest looking tramps, etc. Rusev has a nice trimmed beard. All small things, but just part of what people think are problems. Yeah, the whole process needs a shake up, but we've been here before. zzzzzzzz.

I say that Cena could be a great heel because, and I'm quoting JBL here "People have to hate your gimmick and pay to see get your ass kick" That's Cena for the last 5 years and creative is too stupid or too scared to make the turn.

It's probably like fans get tired of everything, so they will get sick of heel Cena in a fortnight, or month at best. Reigns has his big moment at Mania and then Cena turns on him. Cena gets his loudest pop in years and Reigns is seen as a jabroni. I'm just exaggerating. It would force them to think, obviously, but then top of their mind has to be what if it fails? Is it worth the risk? And every time they come up with no.

WWE do not want to tell that story. Cena is the hero, and until they get a hero to take his place then, so never. Yeah, opinion is split on Reigns, mostly negative, well I guess, it's negative here, so I'll use that as a result. I'm also not seeing the next face of the company in him, so maybe the search for the successor continues after Roman Reigns. I've heard the calls for Ambrose, etc.

It;s unfortunate that there is no wrestling war going on, Hogan heel turn came out of that and there was money to be made. Cena and WWE take a look at monthly income or whatever and laugh at the mention of heel turn.

The problem with Cena is that he is a white meat babyface who has had that same gimmick for since coming to Raw in '05. That is 9 years with the same gimmick with very little variation. No one else has done that while continuing to be an active main eventer.

Take another white meat babyface like Hulk Hogan for instance. Hogan was face from '83 or '84 to '95. That's over 10 years as a face with little change. The big difference though was Hogan didn't get the exposure that Cena did. Cena turned face in '03 and began started getting boos in '05. In my opinion two years is too long for a top guy to stay one gimmick, especially when the majority of the time the gimmick is something boring like a white meat babyface. In those two years, Cena I would say had more televised matches than Hogan during his whole '84 to '95 face run. That is over exposure.

Take another white meat babyface like Sting. Sting is a wrestler that I like to compare to Cena. Both aren't great wrestlers, but can have good matches with the right opponent. The difference is that Sting knew when to change his gimmick. From '87 to '96 he was a white meat babyface with the "surfer" gimmick. From '96 to WCW's demise in '01 he was a white meat babyface with the "Crow" gimmick, with a short heel sting in '00?. While in TNA he used the "Crow" gimmick as a babyface, a mixture between the "Crow" and "surfer" gimmick as a babyface, a heel sans facepaint, a "Joker" babyface gimmick that was a little Jack Nicholson Joker, a little Heath Ledger Joker, and a little Jim Carrey Mask.


I think Cena could be a great heel. The problem is that as a heel he it is possible that he wouldn't be as commercially acclaimed as he was critically acclaimed (ala Stone Cold '01-'02).
