Celine Dion's cover of Tina Turner's River Deep Mountain High qualifies for this thread. I prefer the clear voice of Dion over the gravelly voice of Turner.

California Dreaming, originally performed by the Mamas and the Papas, was covered by America. America's version adds a saxophone bridge that makes their version a little jazzy and even more melancholy.

Reba McEntire released a cover of Kenny Rogers Sweet Music Man.
While Rogers' sings man to man, the song is clearly about a relative with some celebrity status. And the phrase "the song you had written for me you sang to someone new" is quite puzzling. In the McEntire version, the phrase is clearly about a lost love interest. |

Thanks, oldperv. I have only heard two of those, and will listen to all of them before next weekend.

oldperv mentioning Aretha Franklin's Chain of Fools reminded me of RL (Robert) Burnside's version off of Wish I Was In Heaven (2000) ... its gotta slow burn that goes straight to yer feet, makes ya move that ass.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but KT Tunstall's version of Led Zep's "Rock and Roll" is great. Her guitar work is incredibly precise.
