Florian Schneider dead: Kraftwerk co-founder dies at 73

Billboard reports Schneider died “from a short cancer disease just a few days after his 73rd birthday,” according to Hütter.

Schneider and Hütter formed the influential German electronic music group Kraftwerk in 1970. The band was credited with pioneering electronic music with a variety of instruments, including homemade and custom-built devices, and an experimental mix of multiple genres and soundscapes.

The BBC points out David Bowie, Depeche Mode, New Order and Daft Punk were influenced by Kraftwerk; Bowie even named a song on his 1977 album “Heroes” after Schneider, called “V-2 Schneider.” Coldplay used part of the group’s “Computer Love” for the Grammy-nominated 2006 hit “Talk,” and hip-hop artists like Jay-Z, Dr. Dre and Afrika Bambaataa sampled their music.

Kraftwerk received a Grammys lifetime achievement award in 2014 and were nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame six times, but have not been inducted.

Schneider played the synthesizer, vocoder, flute, sax and other instruments, plus provided vocals over 10 albums including 1974′s acclaimed “Autobahn.” He left the group in 2008.

According to Billboard, Kraftwerk planned to go on a North American tour this year for its 50th anniversary, but the concerts were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"The Voice", as he was known to Central New York audiences, has been silenced. Benny passed away at home this morning, surrounded by family, due to complications from Parkinson's Disease.

He may not have been well known nationally, but his 1980 ballad, "Into the Night", has stood the test of time. In fact, it is one of those few select songs that have hit the Billboard Hot 100 more than once, in separate years.

Originally from Cleveland, OH, he made his way to Baltimore in search of music fame. Partially succumbing to the trappings of stardom, it appeared his music career was over, but a Syracuse, NY DJ, Tommy Nast, started playing his songs. Syracuse soon adopted the graveled-voice singer, and a 40-year love affair ensued.

I was fortunate to know him, not only having seen him perform a number of times through the years, but asked to be his backup bassist in the late 90's and early 2000's, in case his bassist couldn't make gigs. Unfortunately, I never had the honor to share a stage with him, but he was one of those rare musicians who put heart and soul into his songs... he lived vicariously through them with an unbridled passion, never giving less than 100%.

And though he relocated to California years ago, and his visits to Syracuse (and gigs overall) lessened, mainly due to contracting Parkinson's Disease, he was beloved by CNY music fans. So much so, he was part of the inaugural Syracuse Area Music (SAMMY) Awards Hall of Fame in 1993.

In recent years, he was only able to return to New York and perform once a year, at Christmas. Though noticeably trembling, and needing a teleprompter to read lyrics, as well as occasionally forgetting where we was in the song, we fans understood and appreciated the effort, as his passion for music shone through in his final years.

I offer my condolences to his family, as well as his many fans wherever they may be. The man known affectionately as "the voice" may not physically be here anymore, but the voice will always be around to remind us of how to respect the music we love...
