So taking things one step further, I've organised a CD challenge with my friends to see who can come up with the best Covers CD. There has to be 5 songs, and the rules are as follows
1. The original song must have been a hit when released (say, top 50?) 2. The cover song must also have been a hit when released This makes Hendrix's "Watchtower" ineligible as it was never a single nor a hit for His Bobness. Any other suggestions, discerning music fans? |

Watch Jerry Lee Lewis cover "Me & Bobby McGee" and totally own the song (and remember, Janis Joplin's version was also a cover-it was written by Kris Kristofferson).

Wow I just read all eleven pages (and counting). A lot of bands I had never heard of doing gem "filler" (read non-hit) tracks, but interesting none the least. The "idea" of the thread I thought was to name a track that made everyone forget the original. Not tracks like the Black Crows "Mama I'm sure hot to handle" because most kids at that time probably did not know it was a cover (Otis Redding I think) So here is my two tracks worth. Both recognized by the writer as being better. "Respect" by Aretha Franklin. When Otis "Dock of the Bay" Redding heard it, He said "I just lost my song!" Can I get an Amen? "Fields of Gold" by Eva Cassidy. Sting thought this version was perhaps better then his. He still does it in concert so he might be over it. And lastly a song that was so good another artist pulled a similar song from his album even though it was the title track. Ever wonder why Bob Seger's ? the "Stranger in Town" has no track about strangers in town or elsewhere? Because the track he wrote was a bit like Billy Joels "The Stranger" and he thought Joels was better so he cut the track after hearing Joels newly released album of the same name.

So shoot me for a 5 YO bump...
This one comes with a preamble of sorts... I'm not saying this is better than the original by any stretch of the imagination, but based upon previous (and even current) personal musical tastes, I have always dug Sting's version of Jimi's "Little Wing". Love the funky feel of it, while keeping the tempo, more or less. |

Tomorrow Never Knows by The Beatles check out Monsoon's version.
A Perfect Circle has a recording of all covers, most all are great. For a different and unexpected version of Little Wing, seek out The Corrs, and dig a bit deeper for a live recording of a Joni Mitchell show, where Jaco Pastorious plays Little Wing as a solo piece on his bass. Not necessarily better, but different. Then there is an album called Whore where different bands cover Wire tunes, standouts by Lush and My Bloody Valentine. Cover album of Carpenters tunes? Avoid at all costs. |

Ah, no. This thread was moved here intentionally when the music discussion board was begun for that very reason. At the risk of saying anybody did anything better than Elvis, I do have one better than Elvis. Dwight Yoakam's remake of Suspicious Minds employed the same backup singers from the Elvis version and much more advanced electric guitar and keyboards. Dwight's got a good voice too. I prefer Laura Branigan's version of Squeeze Box over the Who. More I will think of later. |
