Public Service Announcement to all Mac users:
.exe files cannot run on a computer running any version of the Macintosh OS (including classic), so no need to run for the hills: I managed to say run three times in a single post: where is my achievement badge?

mystery solved
It still escapes even me to read from left to right and top to bottom everytime like I was taught in school. Being that as it may, I found the option to waive the downloadmanager in the upper right hand corner of extabit's convoluted free dl page. Happy hunting!

Reason: p.s. addition
p.s. filefactory also has this option but it's clickable box to waive the dlmanager is in much closer proximity and with far less clutter on the page |

Here's yet another example:
Download link: http://************/file/28c9peyy60eq...atiana.avi?af# Once you get to the download part it tries to download LR.Aliciain_Tatiana.avi.exe (301kB) from storebox1.info If you think that's not a virus, feel free to download and execute. |

worked fine: virus free - http://************/dl/231110949/395...erted.wmv.html the page is still prompting for an add-on which you may have installed inadvertently named: "fast direct torrents download" find this add-on and disable/delete it |

After that, when I followed the on-screen prompts, waited the requisite 30 seconds, solved the captcha, then I got the download page. From there, if you don't uncheck the download manager box at top right, yes, of course you will be prompted to download the .exe file. But if you uncheck the download manager box, and then click the download link, the .avi file will begin to download, exactly as it should. It's all about paying attention... making sure the pop up box for the link you're downloading matches what's listed, right down to the megabyte, making sure the file extension is the same, making sure to uncheck anything you don't want such as unnecessary download managers, etc. In other words, common sense shit... P.S. - Extabit, and the others, will add the .exe extenion to the file name you intend to download, hoping you won't know the difference. That's where "LR.Aliciain_Tatiana.avi" gets changed to "LR.Aliciain_Tatiana.avi.exe". It's their download manager, just with the name of your file, so it looks innocuous. |

Thanks guys, for setting me straight. I have all kinds of things blocked / suppressed in my browser, so my screens look a little different. I tried a plain Firefox version and could deselect the checkbox. Maybe not a virus, but pretty underhanded (and storebox1.info is usually bad news).

But the bottom line is that if Planet Suzy wants to stay true to the ideal of its founders and follow the formula that trail blazed our community up to the number one spot, our staff need to come down on any host that surreptitiously launches .exe files when people innocently click on a download link: some of our members are only 18 years old and don't even know what an .exe file is: if the rules are unable to defend them, I at least hope that the more experienced staffers take a more pro-active enforcement strategy when dealing with those who post such links.

At the same time, we have witnessed some well tested and established hosts being marginalized or banned altogether. If this is unclear, study my sig for some hints..

sometimes it comes down to who is flushing the toilet....
[quote=alexora;8097439]The real problem is that recently some changes have occurred at an executive level, and this has resulted in a plethora of dodgy hosts being allowed here:
With all due respect, of course: Now that you are down off your I, sir, applaud you for your serious concerns for the finest website I've ever found. I also love this place. Now, I am not entirely aware of the history of all the politics and goings-on here at the PlanetSuzy, but I respect your passion. It is necessary in order to keep order, in my opinion. btw, RS screwed me like a drunken whore.....but, shit happens. |
