It doesn't matter if you have a 100GB drive or a 4TB drive, if it's important, you should have copies.

Hi! 3 or 4 TB Hard drives are very good, really worth the prize, but only in you use them as external HDD. I suggest choose a compact model (WD or maybe Toshiba)intead of buy an internal HDD and build it to an external house/dock. Also importand that an external HDD's are built for keep the files, not for everyday use. For internal use I suggest stay with 2TB HDD-s, because a lot's of motherboard (maybe mmost of them) still unable to boot from a HDD wich bigger than 2TB, and 32bit op systems also could have problems with running in a bigger drive. a) Using external drives - this ensures data is not always being accessed and moved around; and b): Buying a few drives with a average sized capacity (1TB) - this reduces the amount of data you lose if a hard drive failed. For example, say you had 4 x 1TB hard drives. 1 hard drive failed but the other 3 are still operating. You have only lost 15% of your data. It's not all smile but much better than losing 100%. c): Defrag your drives (defraggler is good) - as data is being moved constantly, defragging your drives can be a great to way to ensure optimal efficiency and puts less pressure on the drive. Note if the drive is a solid state, do NOT defrag it - it's electronic, everything is handled automatically. d): Review the health of your drives regularly - this can be done by downloading your hard drive manufacturers diagnostic tool, usually it can be found on their website. this tool will tell you the "health" or status of your drive. depending on the result, it can help you make an informed decision on what to do. Lastly from all my years as an experienced IT professional I can recommend Western Digital for hard drives. Try and stay clear from Seagate. Good luck SCD

I don't stash as much data as most of the porn fiends around here and this is the rule I've always used. I'm not saying that the larger drives aren't very reliable, but I'm not putting all my eggs in that big of a basket, or making backups of my backups. |

As I am out growing my 2TB drive I want to get a bigger one.
My question is do I go for 3TB or 4 TB ? At the current rate of "new data" a 3Tb will do me for one or two years and a 4TB for 3 or 4 years. I am not interested in having several 1TB drives as it is a nightmare keeping track of things. I will have several other drives as backups so that will be 3 x 3TB or 3 x 4TB.

Could I suggest that you backup all of your files to an external hard drive and store this offsite. |

Depends! I would rather have 1TB go down if there is a HDD crash than a 3 or 4. Unless of course you have everything backed up as well. Better to have to reget or try to restore files on a smaller drive than have to try that with a 3 or 4 TB.
Having had to deal with that issue on a number of occassions let me tell you it's not fun. |
