Question File Sync Software

I'm looking for a very reliable file synchronisation program. Up until now I've been using the free MS progy SyncToy, but have encountered a number of problems with it, and I don't trust it to do the job anymore.

The main purpose will be to sync files between the main storage drive on my PC, and two external drives that I frequently use with other machines. At the moment I'm doing a massive reorganisation of all the data files on my PC. So, I'm moving folders, renaming files and folders, deleting files and folders etc. etc. I want to be able to have all those types of changes reflected on my external backup drives at the click of an icon.

I don't want any cloud based solutions - all my sync requirements are to my external hard drives or to another laptop on my home network.

I've done a lot of reading but there are a lot of programs out there ranging from full commercial solutions to freeware. I'd be very interested in hearing your recommendations/experience with sync software.

BTW, I don't mind paying for a good program.

Check out deltacopy, rsync for windows and it's free :P. I've used the unix version, no experience with the windows version though :P

I agree with DiamondHead. I personally use FreeFileSync.
I use it to create a batch backup file "?.ffs_batch"
Then I created a real .bat file that executes the ?.ffs_batch file
Then I use task scheduler to execute the .bat file multiple times a day
It mirrors my User folders to a backup drive flawlessly.

Thanks DiamondHead and Me Love Beer. I've just been playing around with FreeFileSync, and it looks like just what I need.

I really like the Compare feature that very quickly shows you the difference in content between two drives. One of the things that had me worried about SyncToy was the difference in size between two drives after they had been synced. In my case around 7.5Gigs. But SyncToy had no way of showing you why there was such a large difference. Using the Compare feature in FreeFileSync I was able to see that difference was made up entirely of system files like Thumbs.db files which are excluded in a SyncToy backup.

Being able to make a file for file comparison inspires a lot of confidence, and I think this will probably become my main sync tool from now on.

Thanks again guys, your help is very much appreciated.
