NoScript FTW!!!
If you are a windows user, don't surf the internet without Firefox + NoScript, or your PC will get pwned in no time.
Alternatively, you could ditch Windows, then install a Linux distro, and never again have to worry about all the Windows malware lurking online. |

OK Guys & Gals! Let's not turn this into a Mac Vs. Win thread! There are plenty of other threads that have flogged that subject to death and beyond.
This thread relates to FF and Windows security against malware. So if you want Mac/Win fisty-cuffs - find another thread. |

I tend to use IE9 mostly with my FF mainly for development and facebook. Using IE9, Kapersky and Win 7 I have not had a virus or trojan. I get the odd one trying to get through but trusty Kapersky always nails it before it hits.
I know many will be thinking now that my PC is probably super infected and falling to bits but I guarantee its not. I know a bit about coding and what to look for if I am infected and there is nothing on my PC (PC's infact) that I did not put there myself. Not entering a MAC vs Linux vs Windows discussion but I do like what Mac can do with graphics, music and video editing. Its a nice machine indeed and nothing against it. Never actually had one because I live by the computing rules of "if it works dont fix it" and my PC is fine. Never tried Linux either but I would actually dual boot a second OS rather than run in an emulated DOS window. All have good bits and all have bad bits. I recently bought a new laptop with touchscreen ready for Windows 8. I have three main development machines which all are Intel i7 and all have crazy amounts of RAM and top end graphics cards. Very happy at the moment with my computing systems and what they are capable of. |

I tried using NoScript before with my FF, it was absolute garbage for me. AdBlockPlus plus the ABP Pop-Up & Element Hiding Helper for ABP add-ons are all I need, they've never given me any problems and if anything does slip by, a couple clicks and it's gone.

Your last point is a great one. But to extend it ... I submit that poorly educated users are a danger in any operating system. I've made a very healthy living the past 25+ years rescuing Microsoft users from one user mishap after another that's wiped out data. Can't blame that one on the penguin! |

I've read feedback from those who fix machines for a living saying if not for registry cleaning software they'd be a lot poorer.
When you consider a program like Hijack This comes with warnings not to attempt removing anything from the registry unless you understand exactly what it is your doing and if you dont come to a forum, post the log and you will be guided through what needs to be done. versus registry cleaners...run...read the log...cross fingers and toes.... press OK Might explain why the best thing anyone can learn is how to backup & recover for when it all goes pearshaped either from a serious infection or self destruction. |
