I'm usually on the go, and I fucking hate the fact that everything is getting smaller. I hate the fact that texting has taken off, and phones have internet, and laptops are shrunken into little flatscreen devices. I like using my laptop, and that's what I'll use out on the road. I can check it just the same as some of you would your phone, and even better, I'll make phone calls on my fucking phone instead of doing both on one device. I'm sorry, but there has to be a difference. And stop texting me-- I won't reply. Fucking number keys are for numbers.
Ugh, the things my generation are embracing. I just like using computers for computing, my cell for phone calls, and I have no use for little flatscreen mini-computers. I'd be willing to say that tablets are around to stay, though. People love those things. |

Tablets have their (limited) uses.
Say you are watching a motoGP or F1 race on TV, and also want to have live timing handy. Tablet is ideally suited for that kind of thing. You can relax back into the sofa with a tablet in your hand. |

Amazon.com: Dell Inspiron 14" i14RN-1364DBK Laptop with Inter Core i3-2330M 2.2Ghz, 4GB DDR3 Memory, 640GB Hard drive, Wifi-N, BlueTooth, USB 3.0, Windows 7 Home Premium: Electronics
640 GB vs 16 GB? Check. Can play games? check (Starcraft 2 for instance). Can run memory and CPU intensive applications? Check. Has a keyboard? Check. (means if you want to buy a keyboard the Ipad will cost even more). Imagine trying to play a game like SC2 without a keyboard. Has a bigger screen? Check. Is sturdy? Check. Why would I want to buy a tablet again unless I have more money than sense? Sometimes not even then, a lot of people who spend their money on this overpriced toy aren't even in the average income range. |

I think there definitively is room in the marketplace for tablet like devices. These are not intended to compete with (or replace) smartphones, laptops or netbooks. I would not want to have to pull out a tablet to answer a phone call, nor would I consider using it to take pictures.
Laptops are great, and you can see them being used in public in places like cafes and bars, but a tablet can be used in places like buses and subways and even park benches without the user looking like an idiot who is showing off. I own and use a smartphone, a laptop and a desktop computer. I use my smartphone on the journey in to work, on a public bus, to read the news, check eMails etc, but do indeed find myself squinting (I am over 40, after all...). The laptop is good when traveling, or working offsite in libraries etc, but only when sitting down at a desk or table: it may be called a laptop, but keeping it in your lap is not comfortable and is even a fertility risk for men. None of these devices are a substitute for each other, but are a good compromise in terms of technology Vs situational environment. A tablet computer (be it the iPad or any other), appears to be a very useful device, bridging the gap between the small display and fiddly interface of a smartphone, and the rather bulky laptop. This may be envisaged when using tablets while standing and walking, for example while walking down the isles of a warehouse to do some stock-taking, or or by doctors during ward rounds in hospitals, or in a more casual sitting situation than at a desk or tabletop, such as lying back on a sofa: usage that would not be practical with a laptop, and tricky with a smartphone. Walking around while using a laptop is difficult and you risk dropping it. iPads are also very useful to pilots and the USAF has purchased several for its pilots as they are far more practical in the cockpit than laptops.

Tablets are great for reading, watching video, check email, update a remote torrent server, checking web cams, as a remote control for other computers and media players. Great item!
Via WiFi I have easy access to my NAS. But I still need a "real" computer. And a NAS. |

Personally, I think tablets are really usefull if you just want to watch videos, do a little lite net surfing, read a book and play games. But if you want to do something more then you would need a proper laptop or desktop computer.
