Need some Help!! I got hacked?! I am Screwed!!
I set up a wireless router at about twelve pm today. No more than an hour later, someone had posted some information about a friend of mine on 4chan. My emails addresses and most of my site passwords have been changed and I cannot get into any of them, Bank account info messed with too, thank god I changed that back already.
I kept all my emails for like forever, and I am thinking that whomever got into my computer while I had the router installed was able to get any and all information out of my emails I held, and might be responsible for the 4Chan post that was done. I had an UNENCRYPTED router going, No firewall at the time, Yeah real stupid, I know, and I didnt know this was the case. I am now back on my plug in modem, no router. Can someone have sent out stuff from my computer, using MU IP ADdress when they did? Could they have posted from MY ip and then used MY emails when they did? I do not know how any of this works, and I would hate to be in some way responsible for my friends problems from the 4chan posts if my own blatant stupidity had somehow caused it. HELP!!!!!!!! Please, any help would be appreciated!!!

Yes. Someone on your wireless modem is using your IP address. You must have had your drive shared as well, as that's the only way someone on your modem could even see that stuff. Then you must have had your a file with all your passwords included.
You should use WEP protection to avoid war driving, and you shouldn't share your main drive. You should have a separate drive that you share things on your network. |

Stay away from WEP Encryption. It is old and easy to crack, Instead use WPA or WPA2 with a strong password (at least 9 characters with uppercase letters and symbols).
Do not connect the router to the internet modem until you are absoultely sure that it's secure! Change your router's admin password! Check your user manual for the steps. About the sites..., I think you should consider contacting site administrators and explain to them that your identities were stolen. if you're lucky you could try forgotten password option. Also see if you can contact the 4chan Admins and get them to remove the comment! or see if you could edit it yourself. Good luck and act quickly!

Stick to WPA2 encryption, use MAC adress binding. And finally, stop SSID broadcasting.
However, if the person intending to hack your network will go to any extent, shut down the wireless network and use wired ones only. |

If your wireless router has WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) then there are some known vulnerabilities that make it real easy for someone to hack into your router. Be sure to disable that functionality as well.
And keep in mind that anytime you connect wirelessly, you trade security for convenience. Even WPA2, which is considered uncrackable at this time, can be bypassed by a determined hacker.

To crack WPA2 all you have to do is capture the initial handshake packets between the client and router, MAC addresses are easily spoofed, and hiding the SSID will do nothing as the signal is still being broadcast. I do agree the only safe option is to completely disable wireless, and connect via hardwired cables. |
