Hi,

I have a lot of full movies that I only keep for a single scene, so I would like to start extracting that single scene and throw the rest of the movie away to reduce the overall size of my collection.

Can anyone recommend me a (free) software that allows me to do so? I do not want the quality of the extracted scene to be worse than the quality of the movie it came from. It should also be quite fast, because I have a lot of material to work on. And it should work with a lot of different codecs. I tried using that editor that comes with Windows 7, but it would not open many of my files.

For .avi files VirtualDub is my only choice. Take a look at the VirtualDub Tutorial Thread.

yeah for avi virtualdub, they have x64 version too and for mkv probably mkvtools, that one works for mp4 too, you just gor mkv as export container.

Yea VirtualDub. You can save to any quality you want or direct stream it.
