What do I use to use to open RMVB files?
I recently download a video that came as RMVB file. I've never come across this type of file before, and Windows doesn't know how to open it. Is there something special I need to do or download to open a RMVB file?

RMVB is a video format by Real.com. You can download their free player if you want to view the vid. Personally I hate RMVB as it is not very compatible with editing software. Others may have different views however.

I agree with Pad: Real Movie is an fiddly format, and I've never found a way to convert it's files into avi, mpeg etc.

WinAVI will convert RMVB to .avi, and there are a number of other similar progs. However none of them seem to be free. Ive tried a couple that had trial DL periods, but they all seemed to be problematic and I gave up in disgust.

I use Real Alternative:
http://codecpackguide.com/realalt.htm with Media Player Classic, which is a good all-round player. |

Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative are both worth downloading.
The barebones simplicity of the Media Player Classic is very nice. |

Gom player will also play these file formats if selected when installing. Two issues other than those posted above are RM files can be notorious for having an embedded link to the originating site, or even worse a malware link. Particularly if the file has been downloaded from an Asian site. I know because I got the nasty little "vbstub". The one and only time ever infected in >15 years.
Secondly, even with commercial converters you'll never get the quality that has been advertised. In a word or two keep away from this format. |
