You haven't said whether you're using Windows Vista. Vista has some built-in DRM to prevent the computer from generating high-quality output unless the hardware it's attached to is what Microsoft says is 'secure'. The 'secure' part isn't about protecting you - it's to 'protect' the content providers from having unauthorized copies made. Or so they say, most people simply think MS is trying to use it's Windows marketshare to grab control of standards for hardware development. It's a loooong (somewhat technical) story, feel free to familiarize yourself with it if you care: http://cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut00...ista_cost.html The short version is, this 'content protection' system seems to work just as well as everything else in Vista - badly. I've seen reports that when users attempt to view any high-quality content with it, it doesn't degrade the signal (that's what it's supposed to do) but simply shows a blank page, or locks up. I don't know myself, I've never used a machine with that crappy OS on it. So, is your box running Vista? If so, new drivers may not help. 'Downgrading' (to Win XP) or upgrading to Linux might, tho... Vista... the Outer Limits of computing...
There is nothing wrong with your computer. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We (Microsoft) are controlling it. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the forseeable future, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat, there is nothing wrong with your computer. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Outer Limits. |

I'm using window XP Home. I tried to up-date my driver buy Microsoft says my computer has the latest driver version installed. I did try playing a 1080 in VLC but the quality wasn't that great.

You might also want to try Media Player Classic
Media Player Classic is a windows app, but not by Microsoft and is nothing like the current Microsoft Windows Media Player. While I don't use it to make thumbnail contact sheets, it does a pretty decent job and its a pretty good media player. For me, I like it as a player because I can run multiple instances at once and it allows great control over how much of the screen the controls take up as well as size and aspect ratio control. A lot of the commands can be done from the keyboard so my default view shows a borderless video screen with no controls. Makes for a very clean view. |

Sometimes Windows Update isn't aware that a more up-to-date driver is available. You should also check the website of the manufacturer of the video card.

But still, it sounds like VLC didn't cause your screen to reset like before. Personally I don't like the Windows media player anyway. It is far to resource hungry for what it does. But then, that is typical Microsoft . . . |
