One of the most distinctive adult films ever made, Cafe Flesh s story line is centered around the one percent of human beings who are still able to enjoy sex after a nuclear holocaust. The rest of humanity has been rendered unable to engage in any procreative acts without causing themselves rending psychological torment. Those who still can derive pleasure from sex are forced by post-war authoritarian government thugs to entertain these sexual negatives with their now unique ability, and to try to stimulate them back to their pre-apocalyptic sexual selves. Like the premise itself, the sex depicted here is as imaginative as it is varied, and as we might expert, full of kinks. This is one of those rare adult films so full of creative energy and explosive imagination that it seems a bit of a pity it has to be segregated from mainstream audiences with an "X" rating.

One of the strangest porn films ever made, and more disturbing than erotic IMHO. Yet, it is very well made, with good acting and great sets, and certainly one of the finest examples of science fiction porn.

From Jim Holliday's original 1986 review:

Without question, the all-time cult adult favorite midnight movie champion classic. In addition, it has quite simply the finest acting ever seen in an erotic film. Rinse Dream's post nuclear follow-up to NIGHTDREAMS should be mandatory viewing for film buffs of all genres. The problem with the picture can be summed up in one blurb -- it is the best explicit film ever made that is lacking in eroticism. However, you have to be hip to appreciate CAFE FLESH. It will drive conventional sex film fans batty...

Director Dream's visionary masterpiece is marred by the fact that while explicit, the sex ain't hot. His third and final [sic] film (NYLON STREET) will combine NIGHTDREAMS and CAFE FLESH into an erotic furnace, it it ever gets made [Ed. note: it never did get made, unfortunately]. The supporting cast of odd balls is something special to behold, including Tantala as Moms and Terri Copeland as the June Cleaver type housewife who balls the milkman in the rat suit. Tantala's debut appearance is a non-sex role. Since the music trade mags have reported it, hip comedian Richard Belzer has a cameo as the hyper fellow announcing Johnny Rico's arrival. Kevin James (as Rico) is a 6'3" version of Rinse Dream, complete with sunglasses. Check it out. Rinse will hit it big in Hollywood one of these days.

...Cafe Flesh holds your interest throughout. It begins in a daringly abrasive way (Max jeering at the Cafe Flesh audience -- and at us, too, as he grins right into the camera) and hooks us not with hardcore sex (though it has that, too) but with its ideas and conflicts. The script, by director Stephen Sayadian* and writer Jerry Stahl (later the subject of the 1998 biopic Permanent Midnight), is tight, efficient, and often acridly witty.
