Yes, it is softcore. But this film is historically interesting for fans of hardcore, too.

The director, Radley Metzger, later changed his named to Henry Paris and made several of the very best hardcore films of the 70s (of any era, really):

The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann
Naked Came the Stranger
The Opening of Misty Beethoven
Barbara Broadcast
Maraschino Cherry

The roots of these hardcore classics can be seen in The Lickerish Quartet and other softcore films that Metzger made in the late 60s and early 70s, and they are great films on their own as well.

I have to disagree with one point the reviewer made: there really isn't "a great deal of sex" in this film, at least not compared to most skin flicks. But there is a lot of psycho-sexual drama, good acting, and excellent filmcraft -- film buffs of other genres besides porn should enjoy this too.
