I certainly don't worship Musk but I think he is moving the ball forward which is what great people throughout history have done. He may not be the smartest, or even a genius, but he knows how to get things done. He revived the electric car market and forced the big manufacturers to follow suit, which is good for the environment. He has put Americans back in space, from American soil. He's creating global communications networks which should raise the quality of life globally. He's a champion of free speech, I guess unless it has to do with him which is very hypocritical.

He is a bit of a tool but he is pushing us in the right direction.

Appeal judges uphold previous ruling, citing ‘implied threat’ in CEO’s tweet directed at Fremont employees who wanted to join union

A US appeals court has ruled that Elon Musk violated federal labour law by tweeting that employees of Tesla would lose stock options if they joined a union.

The New Orleans-based 5th US circuit court of appeals upheld a decision by the US National Labor Relations Board that said the 2018 tweet amounted to an unlawful threat that could discourage unionising and ordered Musk to delete it.

Amid an organising campaign at Tesla’s Fremont, California, plant by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, Musk tweeted: “Nothing stopping Tesla team at our car plant from voting union … But why pay union dues & give up stock options for nothing?”

The UAW president, Shawn Fain, applauded the decision but said it also highlights “our broken US labour law”.

“Here is a company that clearly broke the law and yet it is several years down the road before these workers have achieved a modicum of justice,” Fain said.

Tesla in February defeated a lawsuit from investors over another Musk tweet from 2018 saying funding was secured to take the company private; and a British cave explorer unsuccessfully sued Musk for calling him a “pedo guy” on Twitter.

Musk bought Twitter in 2022 for $44bn.

In Friday’s case, Tesla had argued that the tweet about unionising was not a threat and merely reflected the fact that union workers at other auto companies did not receive stock options.

But a three-judge panel disagreed.

“Substantial evidence supports the NLRB’s conclusion that the tweet is an implied threat to end stock options as retaliation for unionization,” the panel wrote.

The labour board in a separate case in 2022 said Tesla violated labour law by prohibiting workers at the Fremont plant from wearing shirts supporting the union campaign. The company is appealing against that decision.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Elon Musk claims the only thing stopping him from turning part of Twitter's San Francisco HQ into a homeless shelter is the building's owner

Twitter owner Elon Musk has claimed that he wants to turn one of the company's San Francisco buildings into a homeless shelter, but the building's owners won't allow it.

"We tried to turn it into a homeless shelter" but the owners rejected it, the tech mogul told the BBC on Tuesday night. "They won't let us."

Twitter's San Francisco headquarters is made up of two buildings. "We're only using one of the buildings so the other building could be a homeless shelter," Musk said. "We would like to do it right now ... If the building owner lets us, we'll do it."

The building's owners didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, made outside of regular working hours.

When asked for further details about how the homeless shelter would operate, Musk said: "I don't know, we could just let people stay there. It's nice ... They could bring their stuff, bring their tent, whatever."

Musk had previously floated the idea, polling his followers on it in April 2022, shortly after becoming Twitter's largest shareholder. He said at the time that "no one shows up anyway" at the office, though since buying the company he has told workers to return to the office.

Musk has recently clashed with the building's owner after he tried to cover up the "W" on a large logo outside the office to turn the company's name to "Titter." He later painted over the letter in white instead. "They wouldn't even let us take the 'W' off the sign," he told the BBC.

Musk, who told the outlet that he sometimes sleeps on a couch in the office's library, has also converted some of the office space into bedrooms that staff can book out. Other changes Musk has made to the building include auctioning off furniture, trying to sell office plants to staff, and cutting back on snacks. The building's landlord has also sued Twitter for allegedly stopping paying rent.

Twitter opened its first office in San Francisco in 2006 and the company's HQ has been based there ever since.

Musk, who has repeatedly clashed with Californian authorities and moved his EV company Tesla's HQ to Texas, said that Twitter was "not yet" planning to leave San Francisco.

"This place is nice," he added.

You know that supposed Musk family-owned emerald mine that Elon has recently been saying is just a rumor, despite previously saying on record that the mine definitely existed?

"I will pay a million Dogecoin for proof of this mine's existence!" Musk tweeted earlier this month, similarly complaining back in January that "the fake emerald mine thing is so annoying (sigh)."

Well, according to Errol Musk, the unsurprisingly eccentric — and in one major way, extremely creepy — father of Elon, the mine definitely exists. And come to think of it, he'll take that Dogecoin, thanks!

"When I read that, I wondered, 'Can I enter, because I can prove it existed," Errol told The Sun in a new interview, referring to his son's Dogecoin tweet. "Elon knows it's true. All the kids know about it."

"Elon saw them (the emeralds) at our house," he added. "He knew I was selling them."

The emerald mine is a particularly strange piece of Muskian lore — not strange due to the mine's existence per se, but because of Elon's more recent decision to suddenly and completely backtrack on his previous claims.

Per his new Sun interview, however, Errol seems intent on setting the record straight, explaining to the tabloid that he happened upon the Italian owner of the mine at a Zambian airstrip that said Italian also owned. The Italian apparently told Errol that he paid Zambian locals to dig for the gems, and Errol decided to go into business with the gentleman (you know, as one does.)

"What Elon is saying is that there was no formal mine. It was a rock formation protruding from the ground in the middle of nowhere," Errol told the tabloid, noting that he kept his involvement with the operation "under the table."

"There was no mining company. There are no signed agreements or financial statements," he explained. "No one owned anything. The deal was done on a handshake with the Italian man at a time when Zambia was a free for all."

Errol went as far as to say that emerald money paid for his son's move to the US, where Elon would go on to attend the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Business School on scholarship — with, apparently, emerald-generated cash in his pocket for living expenses. In other words, according to the senior Musk, it sounds a lot like Elon's entire road to wealth and fame beyond South Africa was paved with Zambian emeralds.

"During that time," said Errol, speaking to Elon's college years, "I managed to send money I made from emerald sales to him and [Elon's brother, Kimbal Musk] for living expenses."

Look, Errol isn't at all a capital Good Dude, and the Musk family is seemingly pretty strained. But somehow, "I met a random Italian on an airstrip and got into emerald mining from there" seems to check out for these folks, and some clarity on behalf of the world's second-richest man — who doesn't exactly have the soundest relationship to truth himself — would be welcome.

And as for why Errol thinks his son won't just admit that the mine was real?

"Elon's main concern is not to appear to be a 'trust fund kid' who got everything given to him on a plate," Errol told the tabloid, though did add that the belief that his son was born with a silver — or, well, emerald — spoon in his mouth "isn't true."

"Elon took risks and worked like blazes to be where he is today. The emeralds helped us through a very trying time in South Africa, when people were fleeing the country in droves, including his mother's whole family, and earning opportunities were at an all-time low," he continued. "That's all."

First implant of Elon Musk’s brain chip company malfunctions

The first ever chip implanted into a human brain by Elon Musk’s Neuralink company has malfunctioned, it has announced.

The leads connecting the device to the mind of Noland Arbaugh, a paraplegic, “retracted”, reducing the amount of data it could collect.

The device was implanted into the US patient, who was paralysed from the neck down in a diving accident, in January. The chip is about the size of a 50p piece, and sits in the top of Mr Arbaugh’s head, in a hole drilled into his skull.

It has 64 flexible “threads” that extend into the motor cortex of his brain, allowing him to control devices and play video games using his mind. The company announced on Wednesday that the device recently malfunctioned after some of the threads retracted from his brain, reducing the amount of data it could receive.

In a blog post on Wednesday, Neuralink said the failure in the threads resulted in “a net decrease in the number of effective electrodes” and that the device had been adjusted to make it more sensitive.

It said the changes had resulted in a “rapid and sustained improvement” in the number of data bits the device can transmit per second, and that it has “now superseded Noland’s initial performance”.

Mr Arbaugh is the first human patient to receive a brain implant, although the device has also been trialled by Neuralink on pigs, sheep and monkeys. In future, it could be used to allow many more paralysed patients to operate computers.

Mr Arbaugh previously used a tablet computer and stylus, which he held in his mouth. The stylus prevented him from talking and could cause sores. After trialling the device, he said he had been able to beat his friends at computer games – something he previously thought would be impossible.

“It’s like a luxury overload. I haven’t been able to do these things in eight years and now I don’t know where to even start allocating my attention,” he said.

On March 20, the company ran a live-streamed demonstration of Mr Arbaugh playing online chess. He is able to move the cursor of a computer by imagining where he would like it to go, he said.

Experts at Neuralink have explored the possibility that the malfunction was caused by a condition known as pneumocephalus, which involves trapped air in the brain potentially caused by the surgery used to implant the device into Mr Arbaugh’s skull.

It was reported in the Wall Street Journal that the company considered removing the device in a procedure known as “explantation”.

Neuralink, which was founded by Musk in 2016, has said it hopes to implant ten of the chips into patients this year.

The device has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, despite ethical objections from some experts and reports of animal cruelty at the company during its earlier trials.

The company admitted that some monkeys had died during the early tests, but denied accusations of cruelty.

It said it was “absolutely committed to working with animals in the most humane and ethical way possible”.
