they can certainly stop any given individual from doing it, but it might end up even worse by provoking a bunch more to do the same just for the threat. like when some public figure gets bent out of shape about a parody account/portrayal/etc. even after stopping that one the whole thing gets ramped up a million times more.

Someone who sued about a deep fake would just cause the Streisand Effect to bring more attention to the deep fake.

However the threat of lawsuits will prevent deepfakes from ever being a part of mainstream porn. The lawyers will drop on you like a ton of bricks the moment you try to monetize some celebrities image without their consent. If you can't make money from it, it will always be a fringe element of porn, made by amateurs, and will only stay up, even on free download sites, until the cease and desist letters come in.

That's not even the main point. Say they successfully track down the person and sue him out of existence. Great. There are only thousands others left all over the world who also make deepfakes.

Will just give fodder for censoring more content on the internet. Especially given the amount of money that wealthy celebs donate to political campaigns.

One group that could considerably benefit from deep fakes are the social media cockteasers that will never do any actual hardcore content. They could sell the rights to use their likeness for an absurd amount of money.

This topic made me spend a couple of hours yesterday checking out the current state of deepfakes.

I hadn't really done that in at least 18 months. The progress that has already been made in that short time is amazing. I remember back then it was rare to find a clip that wouldn't have telltale signs of being fake within like 30 seconds. Just a few moments here and there were there was some tearing or where the facial replacement hadn't worked properly. Now almost every vid I watched had 3-4 minute stretches, sometimes even longer, that looked perfect. This is the improvement in just a year and a half! Extrapolate that to five years. I think this thing is coming in some shape or form, whether we like it or not.
