Problems with WD MyBook.
Hi everybody,
I have a problem with my WD MyBook 2 TB 1130 (I think it's the scond generation of MyBooks). Inside is an 2TB WD20EARS "Green"-HDD connected with an Symwave 1316 carrying connector board. (WHich is pretty bad because it boastes HW encryption which is the problem i will come to later). I'm on WIndows 8.1. Yesterday I plugged it into my USB 3.0 hub and connected it, everthing was fine. Then I plugged in a PS3 headset in order to charge the batteries. Then everything went wrong: The myBook disconnects and immediately reconnects, but when looking in the Explorer there is neither the correct drive name nor Total Size of the disk or used Space shown. Additionaly Explorer and every other Application kinda freeze when trying to access the drive. I changed USB cable and connected to the PC directly, to no avail. There are no strange noises, the drive runs just fine and sits there. Only occasional sound of drive access at start and then it idles around. So it feels the HDD is pretty ok. It had run about 8000hs in four years. That makes me pretty sure the connector/encryption-board is the problem and not the drive itself. I disassembled the whole thing, WD decided to use clips instead of any screws, which made it quite a fuzz. The hdd is connected to USB via an bord carrying one huge chip (Symwave 1316). After freeing the HDD and connecting it to SATA it runs fine. Windows explorer doesn't mount it though. Disk Management tells me to activate the drive, which I do. Nothing hppens. Testdrive tool finds the drive at dev/sdd/ and displays correct drive size but isn't able to find the right partition (there's a small partition at the start of the drive, 163mb, I guess it contains some evil WD software). I then start reading that almost all WD MyBooks encrypt/scramble data internally, even if you deactivate HW-Encyrption and don't use a password on that drive. That is quite a bummer, I now feel all my data on my several WD MyBooks is pretty much in danger to be doomed eventually and despite they're working fine for me I think I wouldn't buy another one, just for this fact! So now I try the only windows tool i could find ReallyMine on github, but I'm just a user, so I get stuck there after trying to mount it, tool can't find the drive at /dev/sdd/ or any other way I try to point the tool to the drive. I read somewhere it might be possible to replace the connector/encryption-board with one having the same chip and revision number to access your data. It sounds reasonable but I'm sceptic now. Has someone had the same experience and help me out with some advice? You know, of course it was all porn on it I hope to get back! Thanks a lot in advance and Sláinte to you all! |

I will not be able to answer your question in full but as I had one of these My World Book (white light) I was furious after it failed due to HDD issue and WD just fobbed me off because nowhere on the box did it say disposable, so in the end I kept the HDD that turned out to be fine as the Caddy that it is housed it somehow corrupted the data so after a Drive Format etc via Disk Management I kept the drive and chucked the housing and got one of these.
Maybe not ideal for you but better than WDs junk. http://amazon.co.uk/Inateck-Doc...+station&psc=1 |

Sounds like it got a shock when you plugged in your headset. Guess you could try looking on eBay for a cheap second hand one, taking that drive out and popping yours in.
Other than that I can't really think of anything else. Sadly no one has put out tools to get that encryption off. This is why I'm moving to a NAS

I went through a similar situation with my WD. No clicks is a good sign and there is a portion of the drive that is reserved by the WD software. That may explain your discrepancy.
In my case, the FAT got blown away when I plugged it in. When I used a data recovery tool, I was able to see everything was still there. I was able to rebuild it by using the command prompt and typing chkdsk d: /f d is the drive letter designation. That *might* work for you. I don't think it will blow away any data but I'm not entirely sure. Have you tried using a data recovery program like testdisk? Have you used HDDScan to check out how the drive is performing? Both those are open source. |

1. GetDataBack Simple might be able to find the data. The program is a life saver and well worth the cost.

2. One of my WD MyBooks (possible the same as yours?) appeared to be totally toast, but I was able to access it by buying and connecting it to a Sharkoon DriveLink Combo. I was able to save everything. |

Just started using a WD Elements disk after using Seagate for ages and this worried me.
LTL://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=15150 This matrix at WD settled *my* fears about the controller (they dropped hw encryption). This disk is readable outside the enclosure. Too many aren't which isn't a selling point to me. Most of the Mybook disks aren't so unless you can get a new enclosure you've probably lost data - they do say recovery is /possible/ |
