Star Trek and Dark Matter

A few months ago, Dark Matter was cancelled. Needless to say my Friday nights just weren't the same.

Fast forward a few months and the new Star Trek debuted, and IMO kicking ass, it's awesome. After tonight's episode though, I'm wondering...

Did the new Star Trek take certain plots from DM? Tonight’s episode was a time loop episode that was very similar to DM’s version minus the humor, however the concept of being trapped in a time loop isn’t new in fiction.

What does strike me as suspicious, is the ST spore drive compared to the DM’s blink drive, both achieve the same goal, but function differently. I’m wondering if they(writers) saw DM and took the concept of the blink drive, and re-wrote it to be applicable in the ST universe. Both punch a hole in space to transport a ship and crew, and at one point Discovery is described as a ship with advanced tech(the spore drive exists only on that ship) that can win the war. I remember Six making that claim against the corporations when trying to convince the rest of the crew.

Awhile ago, the creator of DM stated on his blog he lost a few production members to ST, as they were both shooting in Toronto.

I’m not saying ST stole the concept, but I won’t be surprised if they took some influence from DM, just something to think about.

Being trapped in a time loop is indeed not a new narrative concept, as we have seen in many films, including 12:01 PM, Groundhog Day and many others.

As for 'Blink Drive' compared to 'Spore Drive': both of these propulsion concepts allow a ship to go from one location to another instantly, but the technical principles behind these technologies are not the same.

That's what I meant by function differently , while the procedure to get it to function might be different, it does seem to "punch" a hole in space and come out the other end.

BUT as I said in tonight episode, the opening monologue sounded similar to what Six was saying, while he was talking about the Blink drive being able to help them win the war, she was talking about the ship, but to me the similarities are suspicious. I think maybe they saw DM and were influenced by it, not necessarily stole it from DM.

The spore drive won't last in ST. In Kirk's time and beyond its never mentioned so I'm guessing they are gonna find its really bad for the environment or the staff of whatever ship uses it.
