R.I.P. Moebius
Hello People,
A sad day: French artist Jean Giraud aka Gir aka Moebius passed away on Saturday aged 73. Among this outstanding artist's most famous creations was the Western comic series "Blueberry" which he co-created with Jean-Michel Charlier, one of the first Western anti-heroes to appear in comics. Under the pseudonym Moebius he created a wide range of science fiction and and fantasy comics in a highly imaginative and surreal almost abstract style, the most famous of which are Arzach and the Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius, and the The Incal. This is a great loss for all who love true artists working in the Graphic Novels field.

Sad to hear. Even 12 year old ignorant me knew I was looking at something special the first time I ever laid eyes on part 1 of the now classic Silver Surfer/Galactus mini. Ashamedly, I never had more than a passing familiarity with Moebius, but in an industry riddled with such profound mediocrity, a simple glance of his artistry was enough to commit his work and name to memory these many, many years later. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

When I was a kid I became infatuated with things like D&D, video games, and comic books. Of course, I'm still stuck on these kind of things even as an adult, but it's just not the same as it was back in the old days. You had these wonderfully evocative artists like HR Giger, Erol Otus, and of course, Moebius. What a legend. Whether it was Heavy Metal or Marvel, he really made a comic book stand out apart from the others on the shelf.
And of course, the occasional pervy picture didn't hurt his stock in my young eyes, either... RIP Moebius. |

I love Moebius. His comic THE INCAL I think is the best in comics History. Still remember when my father gifted to me... I never suspected what kind of stuff I was going to read and I got a little depressed when I finished it for the first time. What a drawer... great imagination, fantastic atmospheres, amazing panoramic views, good face zooms, very clean and simple (but not easy) style, beautiful drawings, beautiful girls...
Thank you Moebius! |
