I CANNOT OPEN MY TOSHIBA 1TB EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. I HAVE TRIED A GAZILLION PASSWORDS TO NO AVAIL.

I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I PUT A PASSWORD ON THIS 1TB EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. ANY SUGGESTIONS OF HOW TO OPEN THIS UNIT WOULD BE DEEPLY DEEPLY APPRECIATED

If it's password protected, you are pretty much out of luck.

I'm not sure this would work but try putting it directly into your computer, also maybe download a copy of ubuntu and burn it, then run it as a live cd and try to access your files

Assuming you mean the BitLocker feature, find the version of this advice that applies to your Operating System.

On Windows 7 32bit:

1- click start
2- click control panel
3- While on control panel, find Bitlocker Drive Encryption icon and click on it
4- here you will see all the partitions on your hard drive and their encryption status, either encrypted or not.
5- on the one that is encrypted, you will find an option to turn off bitlocker. click on it and wait for the machine to decrypt.
