Lonewolf's advice about not allowing synching to nothing is well worth following too.

Here's my concerns:

- if you select "reset" after plugging your Nano into the freshly downloaded iTunes, it could very well erase everything on the Nano and reset it to factory specs. - if you plug the Nano in and try to sync, since you don't have anything in the iTunes library, and you apparently don't have the original songs somewhere on a disc, so you can load them into iTunes, essentially, a sync will sync whatever is in the iTunes library (i.e. - nothing) onto the Nano, essentially erasing the device. That's why I advised to check the box as noted in my post above, so iTunes doesn't automatically try to sync when you plug in (allowing you to manually manipulate iTunes as needed vis-a-vis your specific needs). - ideally, you'd want the Nano to work as a hard drive, so you could simply "pull" the songs off the Nano and onto your computer, but that doesn't work. And as Alexora notes, software to do that no longer exists, but I'm sure someone will create a better mousetrap to accomplish what you want, so in the end, it might be better to simpy wait and see if someone comes up with a solution. (As Alexora also notes, that's how Apple chose to stop unwanted music distribution; in a perfect world, it would be great to go into a folder - a la Firefox profiles - and copy/paste, but leave it to Apple to fuck with the formula.) - this is why I point you toward the Apple Discussion board, to post your querie there. At this point, there may not be a solution other than to not sync at all, so you don't lose your tunes, but if you go to the Apple board, there is a poster there named Kenichi Watanabe, who knows iPods backwards and forwards... if he doesn't know, nobody does. i.e. - Going forward, it's worth the relatively small investment into an external drive, so you can put wanted songs there and keep them there for a rainy day, so to speak. It would cover your ass, not only in this case, but also in cases like HD failure or corruption, which will all but ensure you lose access to your music. I have one dedicated just for music (I have a 7th gen 160gb iPod, so if the HD fails or a reset is needed, my media still there on a hard drive. My laptop crashed in December, so I had to reload iTunes - a completely new version, onto my new laptop, since I went from 32-bit architecture to 64-bit architecture - so subsequent syncs would not affect what's already on the iPod.) |
